Despite leading the Carolina Panthers to a Super Bowl game and multiple winning seasons, former NFL quarterback Cam Newton is rarely mentioned among the team’s legends.

Cam Newton became emotional while speaking about his relationship with the Carolina Panthers organization. The subject popped up while his co-host of the 4th and 1 podcast, Peggy, showed Newton a video of former Panthers players in Germany.

The contingent included Steve Smith Sr., Thomas Davis, and Luke Kuechly. Peggy questioned Newton whether the Panthers sent an invitation. The 35-year-old shaked his head in disappointment.

Newton revealed a recent visit to the Panthers facility at Bank of America Stadium for a 7-on-7 game left him searching for words. The visibly bothered former league MVP revealed that the Panthers did not even have a single picture of him alongside some of the best to ever wear the jersey. They have forgotten him.

However, the visit hurt Newton more than it should have because he did not notice the lack of memorabilia until his eight-year-old son pointed it out to him.

Who brought it to my attention? My son. So as a man, when you have to explain to your son, ‘Daddy, where’s your picture?’

Cam Newton claims he will never retire

The tour guide revealed that fans have to visit the second and third levels of the facility, where they will find sections filled with Newton’s heroics. The organization decorated the first level with legends who have retired, like Smith and Kuechly.

At this particular point in time, the question was ‘Oh, we don’t know if Cam’s retired yet.’ News flash—I’m never gonna retire. I know I’ve played my last piece of football. It doesn’t matter to me to officially retire. I’m in a happy place.

While Newton has all the right to feel hurt by the revelation, he should also look at the situation the Panthers are in. He never announced his retirement and is currently more involved with media work, even joining Stephen A. Smith on First Take.

Technically, he is a free agent, and an NFL team that wants a quarterback can employ his services. This is where the dilemma lies for Panthers owner David Tepper, as the league prohibits teams from promoting an active player as Newton never officially retired. By doing so, they might face the wrath of the league.

However, the Panthers never honored Newton as well. The last time the Carolina franchise showed any spark in the NFL was when the Auburn product played under center. He led them to a Super Bowl appearance and won the league MVP, First Team All-Pro, and three Pro Bowl selection.

After the Panthers released him, the New England Patriots signed him in 2020 for one season before returning to Carolina for a second bite at the cherry the following year. In his final year, Newton lost all five games he started and hasn’t played in the NFL since 2021.
