After the Cincinnati Bengals finished their 2025 campaign with the worst record in the Zac Taylor era, all eyes were glued to any information about his future. The franchise is notorious for sticking with top personnel for a long time, as is evident from the time head coaches and front office executives have been with them.
That explains why fans were not surprised to learn that they will be sticking with Taylor. The Bengals might believe that the record was indicative of the injuries and minor personnel mistakes rather than their head coach’s inability to lead them. However, others do not feel the same.
When you’ve got exceptional talent like Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins, those guys do not need exceptional coaching… When you got great players like that, it’s not hard. Trust me. I can go do that, Mr. Brown. I can be a coach.
Cam Newton said on First Take
The former league MVP questioned why, when someone like Raheem Morris could lose his job despite finishing with a better record, the Bengals stick with Zac Taylor. Newton believes there is enough evidence that he struggled without his top players.

The former QB claimed that even he, with no coaching experience, could lead the Bengals to a similar, if not better, record. Even though his colleagues were initially dismissive of Newton’s claims, they did agree that retaining Taylor was a mistake.
Stephen A. Smith claims Zac Taylor cannot coach without Joe Burrow
When Joe Burrow was out recovering from his turf toe surgery, the Cincinnati Bengals essentially fell flat. They did win the first edition of the Unc Bowl, but that was as far as Zac Taylor could go without his star quarterback.

That man need to go. He can’t coach without Joe Burrow, at all… When Joe Burrow goes down, they forget how to win… You’ve got to find a way to play better football, rather than just put everything on QBs shoulders. That’s on the head coach.
Stephen A. Smith said on First Take
The analyst pointed out that this season, the Bengals’ record has proven that Taylor is incapable of leading a team without a superstar. That is an indictment of his ability as a head coach.

Moreover, Smith also reminded everyone that the same questions came about whenever the Bengals struggled to start a season well. A good head coach always has his team ready.
Essentially, the ESPN executive producer was trying to insinuate that the franchise had committed a major mistake by retaining Zac Taylor instead of looking at an alternative direction that could potentially push them to success.
Rex Ryan roasts Zac Taylor for complaining after Myles Garrett’s sack record celebrations
Other than conversations about his future, Zac Taylor was also in the news for a different topic after their season ended. That was when he and Ja’Marr Chase complained about the officials stopping the game to allow Myles Garrett and his teammates to celebrate his sack record.
You’re fighting for your lives? Your lives have been over for the last 10 weeks… He (Garrett) deserved his moment. Get over yourself, Cincinnati.
Rex Ryan said on Get Up
The former head coach, along with his colleagues, essentially was mocking Zac Taylor for complaining when the league has, in the past, stopped games to celebrate historically important achievements.

Had it been a situation where the Bengals were fighting for a postseason berth, their head coach’s remarks would have made sense. But since the Bengals have been out of contention for a while, Ryan felt that it was childish.
