Cam Newton isn’t a fan of the path that the New England Patriots have taken to reach the AFC Championship game. The former NFL quarterback turned ESPN analyst and content creator called the Patriots’ playoff run “Fools Gold” in a fiery rant on his podcast.
The Patriots reached this stage with wins over the Los Angeles Chargers in the wildcard and the Houston Texans in the divisional round. Newton argued that both the Chargers’ and Texans’ systems were full of holes, despite their appearances in postseason football.
The New England Patriots have had the easiest road to the Super Bowl in NFL history.

Cam Newton suggests that the Patriots’ victory may have been due to fortunate circumstances
The Chargers finished second in the AFC West and qualified to play against the Patriots in the wildcard round. New England only needed 16 points to win the game. Justin Herbert was sacked six times, and he threw for just 159 yards.

Newton called the Chargers a bottom-tier team as they only scored three points in four quarters of football.
The first team that you play, the Los Angeles Chargers… [A] bottom-tier team. Not a team expected to have a deep playoff push. Justin Herbert isn’t who we thought Justin Herbert was. He don’t got nobody protecting him, I was praying for him.
Cam Newton said
The former Panther turned his attention to the Texans, a team that boasted one of the best defenses in the league. However, third-year quarterback CJ Stroud struggled to protect and distribute the ball with his number one target on concussion protocol.
[New England] played another team that came into Foxborough that was deficient skillfully… Houston Texans; Nico Collins, out. That was not the best version of that team. CJ Stroud throwing four interceptions, having a passer rating that was conducive to him just taking a step back and spking the ball.
Newton continued
Stroud’s performance attracted ample heat and criticism from across the league. Three-time Super Bowl-winning QB Troy Aikman claimed that Stroud “has been chasing his rookie success for the last two years. He’s not been the same player.“
Cam Newton provides his verdict on the Patriots ahead of the AFC Championship game against the Broncos
With the win over the Chargers and the Texans, New England qualified for its first AFC title game since lifting the Lombardi Trophy in 2018. Standing in their way are the top-seeded Broncos, who defeated the Buffalo Bills in the previous round.
However, Denver won’t have second-year starting signal caller, Bo Nix, on the roster for the fixture against the Patriots. Coincidentally, the Broncos will be starting Jarrett Stidham, a former teammate of Newton’s in Boston.
Now you [the Patriots] play a Denver [Broncos] team that really is deficient too. You are going up against the second-string quarterback in Jarrett Stidham. Their opponents have been deficient.
Newton said
Clearly, Newton doesn’t hold Stidham in the highest of regards. And not only that, he refused to credit the Patriots’ playoff run.
The New England Patriots are a good team, but the New England Patriots have not also faced anyone that’s also good.
Newton quipped
Sure, the Patriots had the easiest possible schedule, but Mike Vrabel’s team handled nearly every challenge that came their way. Denver, however, is bound to be a tricky opponent.
