Cam Newton prefers to call a spade a spade, even if it puts him in someone’s bad book. The former NFL MVP targeted his ESPN colleague, Stephen A. Smith, over his remarks against LeBron James.
It’s well documented that Smith has a beef with James. Long story short, they don’t see eye to eye. However, to understand the current predicament, curious folks must check out the video clip from former NBA player Marcus ‘Doc’ Holliday, who accused Carmelo Anthony of betraying James.
Newton shared a different view in a recent episode of his 4th & 1 podcast. He called out Smith and Holliday for bringing the feud to the public forum. Newton said:
Dare I say, ‘They lying,’ because me know Stephen that he won’t lie about that… And that’s not to say LeBron James is a bad individual. What I am going to say is, hey, those experiences can be true. But one the same thing, we can’t put people on these pedestals and not expect them to be [real or] authentic… So we had to cite the source like that.
Cam Newton gave his two cents on the beef between LeBron James and Stephen A. Smith
Newton left the NFL and dabbled in broadcasting as a means to stay connected with his roots in football. On the side, he managed to create two successful shows with the help of YouTube. That’s why Newton respects “athlete-generated content.” From his point of view, this form of media keeps the content transparent, allowing fans to form their own opinion.

Smith went on Anthony’s 7 PM in Brooklyn podcast and took a shot at James after the Los Angeles Lakers star schooled him to go easy on criticizing his son, Bronny James. Smith told Anthony:
There’s no way that you’re in an [NBA] arena, you’re LeBron James, and the only angle that somebody sees is a straight up shot of you getting in my face. They see no reaction. They see nothing. And that’s an accident?

Doc Holliday took offense to Anthony giving Smith the platform to spew his agenda against James, whom he once considered a friend on and off the court. Holliday said:
Carmelo [Anthony] betrayed LeBron, in my opinion. And all the reason I say this is that he allowed Stephen [Smith] to come on his platform, his podcast, and sit across from him, and talk mad trash about his boy LeBron and not say anything.

Newton played the role of the Devil’s Advocate by not taking any side, equally criticizing all the parties involved in the matter. Newton said:
I would say this publicly…the thing about content is this, you can’t do two things at the same time and be effective. Those two things, you can’t talk and listen…So, no matter [what] the platform is, you can speak on how you feel. Everybody is entitled to their own judgment.
Newton knows as well as anybody that this feud is long overdue for a resolution. The only issue is that it may take a while for the situation to cool down. Smith knows how to hold a grudge, and James’ actions also indicate that he doesn’t want the veteran sports journalist anywhere near him or his family members.
