The former Carolina Panthers quarterback and MVP Cam Newton has once again entered the mainstream headlines, this time for an unnecessary scuffle with a mascot. A week ago, he stirred debate when he pitched his two cents about team glory and individual successes. A week before that, Newton disclosed that he had asked his current partner for the list of her previous partners.
The quarterback, infamous for his Super Bowl 50 fumble, was present on the sidelines at Legion Field in Birmingham as a representative of ESPN’s First Take, where Alabama State and Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University squared off in the Magic City Classic.
The Magic City Classic matchup, played annually by the Alabama State Hornets and the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, is the largest game played by Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The matchup, first played in 1924, is attended by around sixty thousand people annually and generates around 25 million dollars for the city of Birmingham.
The Magic City Classic, being one of the biggest events in the north-central city of Alabama, is held with huge pomp and glitz. This year’s event kick-started with a festive 40-yard dash between both mascots.
The friendly race between the two nearly came to an ugly end when Cam Newton interfered in the celebration. As the Auburn product celebrated with the winner Hornet, the Bulldog came into the picture and started a playful fight with the mascot.

However, things took a turn for the worse when Newton’s hat was knocked off onto the ground. The controversial media personality open-handedly slapped the mascot in retaliation, inviting more pressure from the mascot. The mascot shoved Newton, and the latter dropped some expletives before warning the mascot to stop messing with him.
The Magic City Classic is a celebration of rich cultural heritage
The First Take’s pitstop in Legion Field gives the country a first glimpse at one of the culturally rich rivalries in the history of the sport. Though this isn’t the first time a Magic City Classic gets such a national broadcast, Stephen A. Smith and co in Birmingham consider this a special opportunity to showcase the week-long celebration.

The event is more than just a gala or a party; it runs for a week, scented with tradition, rivalry, and Black excellence. The Classic is an opportunity for the city to reminisce and reconnect, and raise a Classic Cocktail glass to 89 years of memories.
There was no shortage of sheer excitement in game week. From the vibrant scene at City Walk near the BJCC to the spirited crowds gathering early around Legion Field, the city was unmistakably alive with anticipation and celebration.
In addition to the game, the Magic City Classic had a wide range of events happening in the run-up to the game. The weekend included a free event for the Rhythm and Blues, as well as Funk fans, with a lineup of Ashanti, October London, and one of the iconic Funk bands, Zapp. The event was held at the Birmingham Racecourse and organized by the Jefferson County commissioner, Lashunda Scales.
NASCAR and Talladega Superspeedway returned to City Walk Birmingham for NASCAR’s second Cars + Coffee — Classic Edition on Friday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The event showcased show cars, community car clubs, and automotive enthusiasts, complemented by live entertainment, food trucks, a “Kidz Zone,” and interactive NASCAR-themed experiences.
The cultural and political significance of the Magic City Classic is what makes every single event more special. From a city once called the most segregated city in the country by Martin Luther King Jr., Birmingham now proudly presents the largest HBCU matchup, a testament to its evolving legacy.
