The Tennessee Titans conducted extensive research on quarterback Cam Ward before selecting him first overall in this year’s draft. However, Ward wasn’t the only player from Miami on their radar; his teammate, wide receiver Xavier Restrepo, was also thoroughly evaluated as a potential target for Ward.

During their final season together at Miami, Restrepo recorded 69 receptions for 1,127 yards and 11 touchdowns. Restrepo, an All-American, garnered the attention of scouts and analysts with further looks at him at workouts after the season.

Despite his strong college production, Restrepo went undrafted, largely due to a disappointing 40-yard dash time at the Scouting Combine. Nonetheless, the Titans signed him as an undrafted free agent in the “eighth round” of the draft.

Despite the setbacks, Restrepo has support all around. His former teammate at Miami, Cam Ward, acknowledged his excitement when the Titans signed him. Ward also expressed strong support for his former teammate and highlighted his work ethic and accomplishments.

I was real excited when [the Titans] signed X. He’s somebody who was deserving of it. He’s worked hard every day… He was one of the best route runners in college football last year, he is first team All-conference, he is All-American, he never lost in man coverage. He is a back-to-back 1,000-yard receiver, so why wouldn’t you push for him?

The coaching staff also weighed in on Restrepo’s potential. Head coach Brian Callahan emphasized that while his speed in the Combine is an area of concern, his in-game speed is impressive. He also added that this aspect bought him a ticket to play in the Blue and White.

It’s not going to be easy for Restrepo. The Titans signed Van Jefferson and Tyler Lockett before drafting a pair of receivers to go with the returning Calvin Ridley, so Restrepo has an uphill climb ahead of him.

The Titans got a firsthand glimpse at the Cam Ward-Xavier Restrepo connection

Xavier Restrepo spent the entirety of his five-year collegiate career at the University of Miami, where he developed into a consistent and productive wide receiver. In 2023, he recorded 85 receptions for 1,092 yards and six touchdowns, marking a significant leap in performance.

However, it was the arrival of quarterback Cam Ward in 2024 that truly elevated Restrepo’s game to new heights.

He was named a consensus All-American after leading the ACC in both receiving yards (1,127) and touchdowns (11), becoming one of the most reliable targets in the country. The Miami Hurricanes were inching towards a potential playoff before losing two of the last three games.

Despite the same, the connection between Ward and Restrepo was undeniable, and it didn’t take long for that connection to show itself again during the rookie minicamp. In a video posted by the Titans on May 9, Cam Ward is seen throwing a ball to Restrepo, who caught it impressively.

Restrepo, who’s big on faith and belief, later reposted the tweet with the caption, “God. 👣❤️✝️”

His precision, change-of-direction skills, and savvy route running were on full display, reinforcing why he was such a reliable target at Miami. While questions remain about his long speed and size at the professional level, Restrepo continues to maximize his strengths.

In his Miami Hurricanes days, he utilized leverage, tempo, and instincts to create separation and make plays. If he can translate those traits into consistent production during preseason, he may carve out a valuable role in the Tennessee Titans‘ receiver rotation despite entering the league undrafted. As said earlier, amid the draft stock tank and the weak Combine, Restrepo has impressed some big names, including the head coach there.
