LIV Golf star Cameron Smith has not had the best of times in the major championships this year. Last week, he created an unwanted record for the 2025 season after he missed the cut at the Open Championship. Ahead of LIV Golf UK, the Australian golfer opened up about his disappointing slump and claimed it was more of a ‘mental‘ health issue rather than a technical one.
During the 153rd Open Championship, Smith had a poor start. The Rippers GC captain fired a score of 3-over in the front nine. He did manage to cut the deficit down a bit with two birdies on the back nine and finished the opening round with a 1-over 72 score.
Things went downhill for him on Friday in Round 2. Following bogeys on Holes 2 and 5, he made double bogeys on the 6th and 9th holes and was 5-over for the day after 9 holes.
He started off the back nine with bogeys on the 10th, 11th, and 14th holes. Following a birdie on the 17th, he finished the round with a 7-over par. The Aussie golfer finished 8-over par for the tournament and missed the cut.
After failing to make the cut in this event, Smith became the only player this year to play in all 4 major championships and fail to make the cut in all of them.

While speaking with the Australian Golf Digest, Smith expressed that it ‘sucked’ playing bad in tournaments that meant more than regular events.
Yes, it sucks to play bad in tournaments that probably mean a little bit more than others. I think it’s probably more of a mental issue than actual technique. But yeah, the major results weren’t good.
Cameron Smith told Australian Golf Digest
In the opening round of the Masters Tournament, Smith fired a score of 71. In Round 2 at the Augusta National, he carded a score of 78 and missed the 2-over cutline by 3 shots as he finished 5-over par for the tournament.
At the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, the 31-year-old posted a score of 78 in the first round. With a score of 71 in Round 2, Smith finished 7-over par, 6 strokes behind the 1-over cutline.
During the U.S. Open at Oakmont, Smith fired scores of 75 and 73 in some tough conditions. He narrowly missed the 7-over cutline by 1 shot as he finished 8-over par. Following his missed cut at the Open Championship last Friday, he failed to play at the weekend in all 4 major events this year.
Despite poor major championship showing, Cameron Smith expresses confidence of turning a corner
Cameron Smith was one of the top names last week who missed the cut at the Royal Portrush during the Open Championship. Despite failing to make the cut in this major event, the golfer has expressed confidence in himself and believes that he is turning a corner.

Smith has performed well on the LIV Golf circuit without winning. In the 10 events he has played this year, he has finished inside the top-10 rankings 4 times. He finds himself 16th in the LIV Golf Individual standings following a T7 finish at the LIV Golf Andalucia event.
The motivation is at an all-time high to get back to where I was, and even better than that. So, a bit of a change in attitude, and I’ve been really focusing on the mental side. The last six weeks has been pretty good, and it definitely feels like I’m turning a corner.
