Cameron Young stole the show on Saturday as he chased down Rory McIlroy. Following his impressive performance in the third round, he tied the defending champion at the top of the standings. The American golfer is not expecting a huge support in the final round, as he tied the “world favorite” McIlroy.
After carding a score of 1-over par in the opening round, Young bounced back in the second round. On Friday, he shot 67 to move inside the top-10.
McIlroy, on the other hand, seemed to be running away with the title. An opening round of 67 was followed by a low score of 65 in the second round. This opened up a 6-shot lead for him, the largest lead in Masters Tournament history.
The moving day, however, lived up to its name. Young took charge with 4 birdies on the front nine. Birdies on holes 10, 13 and 14 put him 7-under par for the day.
After bogeying the par-5 15th hole, he birdied the par-3 16th hole and tied McIlroy for first place as the Northern Irish golfer struggled a bit. Pars on holes 17 and 18 saw him end the day with a 7-under 65 score. Young thus overcame an 8-shot deficit to tie McIlroy at the top of the leaderboard.

The 28-year-old will head into the final round alongside McIlroy as his playing partner. While speaking with the reporters in the press conference after the third round, he claimed he was not expecting huge support from the patrons.
I don’t get the sense I’ll be the fan favorite, but yeah, I feel like the support, some fans that cheer for me have gotten louder over the last year. It will still be lopsided. I think. Rory’s kind of a world favorite in the golf world.

Young was not the only one who shot 65 on Saturday, though. World No.1 Scottie Scheffler also got hot and carded a 7-under par score to jump up in the standings. The 2-time Masters winner is 4 shots behind Young and McIlroy.
Sam Burns, who was the co-leader with McIlroy after the first round, remained in contention with a 4-under par score. He is one shot behind the co-leaders. Other golfers who are still in the chase for the title are Shane Lowry, Jason Day, Justin Rose and Haotong Li.
History could repeat itself with a Cameron Young victory on Sunday
Cameron Young’s stunning score of 65 on the moving day saw him come into contention for the green jacket. A victory on Sunday could see him make history.

Well, obviously, winning the Masters Tournament and clinching the green jacket will be a big moment for him, a piece of history could be repeated.
In the past two years, the Masters Tournament winners, Scottie Scheffler (2024) and Rory McIlroy (2025), also won The Players Championship. While Scheffler defended his title in 2024, McIlroy joined him and 7 others to win this signature event at least 2 times.
This year, it was Young who won The Players Championship. Following Ludvig Aberg‘s late collapse, the American international took charge. A final round score of 68 saw him 1-shot ahead of Matt Fitzpatrick to claim his 2nd PGA Tour victory.
