Italian former WTA star Camila Giorgi created a sensation when she announced her abrupt retirement from the sport earlier this year. The 32-year-old did not make an official announcement, and it was found out through the International Tennis Federation (ITF) retired player list that Giorgi won’t compete anymore. But soon her retirement news was overshadowed by a couple of serious allegations.
It was alleged that Giorgi fled Italy to avoid the consequences of tax evasion. The Giorgis were also accused of stealing and running away with the furniture of the rented property they lived in. The landlord claimed that Camila and her family took away the antiques and refused to return them when asked.
The rumors spread like wildlife fire, but nothing was said from Giorgi’s side. Finally, after five months, the Italian has broken the silence on the accusations against her and her family. Giorgi has denied the allegations, saying she never intentionally avoided paying taxes. She also refuted the claims of her fleeing Italy.
Allegedly, Giorgi did not declare her income in 2016. In fact, the truth about her retirement from tennis was discovered just as the Guardia di Finanza was trying to notify her of a notice of conclusion of investigations by the Prato prosecutor’s office for the accusation of failing to declare income in 2016 and tax evasion.
The 2016 case is not the only proceeding for tax offenses in which Giorgi is involved. For not having filed tax returns for 2013 and 2014, the Prato court acquitted her in December. She was accused of evading Irpef for 336,000 euros in 2013 and 410,000 euros in 2014.
Camila Giorgi also responds to accusations of furniture theft
After clarifying her tax evasion matter, Camila Giorgi also spoke about the accusation of furniture theft by her previous landlord. The Italian denied the accusations, saying the house never had furniture, and that they took what was theirs. Giorgi admitted to laughing when the news broke out.
Now, having left behind her life in Italy, Giorgi is settled in America and probably has found a new partner too. With no tennis to play, the 32-year-old has not ruled out a career as an actress. Giorgi is already into modeling.
The Italian won four titles, including the Canada Masters in 2021 during her stint as a tennis player. Her best performance at Grand Slam tournaments was a quarterfinal qualification at 2018 Wimbledon.
