The Dallas Cowboys, the world’s most highly valued team, have the distinct honor of being the only NFC team not to play a conference game in three decades. They were in absolute last season, finishing third in the division behind the eventual champions and the conference finalists. The Cowboys won barely two games at their home ground, AT&T Stadium.

The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up for the new season with fresh hopes. They are well stacked for a quality run in the upcoming season. They have a healthy Dak Prescott returning to the field and a receiving corps that already included CeeDee Lamb, boosted by the addition of George Pickens. If everything works out well, Micah Parsons is a force to be reckoned with.

On paper, the Cowboys look like a team that could make a deep postseason run. But unfortunately for Dallas, football games aren’t played on paper, and the NFC East is far from a cakewalk.

The reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles are still loaded. The Washington Commanders are expected to replicate their last season’s form with a highly weaponised offensive line. They can’t write off the New York Giants either. They have a more solid offensive core in Russell Wilson or even Jaxson Dart, bolstered by Cam Skattebo. The Big Blue are projected to make some noise this season and win more games.

Still, some analysts haven’t completely shut the door on Dallas. On First Take, ESPN analyst Louis Riddick acknowledged that the Cowboys do have a chance to win the NFC East, albeit a slim one.

“Give them an outside chance, absolutely,” Riddick remarked during a recent segment. He seemed cautiously optimistic, acknowledging that while it’s not the most likely scenario, it also isn’t a ridiculous one. After all, the Los Angeles Rams did win the NFC West last year, much to everyone’s surprise.

Stephen A. Smith isn’t one of those analysts who have shut the door on the Cowboys

In response to Louis Riddick’s take, Stephen A. Smith didn’t just shut the door on the Jerry Jones-owned franchise; he slammed it close.

Smith, who’s always on the hunt to roast the Cowboys, instantly lit up the segment with a punchline to shatter any hopes Riddick gave the desperate Dallas fans. He indirectly admitted that not even a healthy Dak Prescott can help them win the division.

Give them an outside chance, absolutely. I’ve got an outside chance of moving my hairline forward, 2 feet forward, as long as I go to Club for Men or something.

Smith, of course, wasn’t done. He directed his attack towards George Pickens, who made a mistake in suggesting that the Cowboys were synonymous with Super Bowls. Smith claimed that the Pickens’ old team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, has way more championships than his new team:

George Pickens is 24 years old. How would you know? You weren’t even born yet! You weren’t even conceived yet. We’re supposed to believe that you sat back and read your history on the Dallas Cowboys? Please.

It’s a fair point. The Cowboys haven’t reached a Super Bowl, or even an NFC Championship Game, in nearly three decades. Their last real brush with dominance came in the 1990s, when Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin ruled Sundays.

The Dallas Cowboys last won the title in 1995, defeating the Steelers in the Super Bowl. They have played eighteen playoff games since, winning only five times. The farthest they have reached is the divisional round, seven times.
