The USA Men’s National football team’s situation got more complicated as they suffered their first defeat at home to Canada in a span of 67 staggering years. After a woeful outing in the latest iteration of the Copa America, USA failed to stave away the Canadian national team following a modest display, which led to the humiliating drubbing.
This was the first game for the team since their exit from the Copa America and the consequential exit of Gregg Berhalter as the head coach. The display on offer from the US players couldn’t really conjure a solid opening for the team, and Canada’s high-press football laced with some lethal speed left their continental counterparts begging for more.
Canada, who made their way to their first Copa semi-final earlier this year, dictated the proceedings in the first half. Jacob Shaffelburg opened the scoring for the Canadians in the 17th minute. There could have been more had it not been for the profligacy of the Canadians. However, they never let their guards down, and a deserved second goal arrived just before the hour mark when Jonathan David found the back of the net.
The change of halves did witness a spirited display from America, which resulted in them halving the deficit with a fine strike from Lucas de la Torre. However, the surge in momentum in the second half wasn’t enough to help USA dislodge the Canadians from their lofty ambitions, and at the end of the 90 minutes, it was the latter who registered history. In the recent wake of affairs, as per reports, USA is in a rush to appoint Mauricio Pochettino as Berhalter’s replacement.
A glance at USA’s woeful recent form
USA’s recent form has been all over the place, with four defeats in their last six matches while drawing 1-1 with Brazil. A staggering thumping at the hands of Colombia set the tone of decadence that saw them concede five goals. Despite a resolute turnaround of affairs to share the spoils with Brazil, followed by a win against Bolivia to open the Copa America proceedings with a victory, things once again slipped out of their control.
In their second match of the Copa America, they suffered an agonizing defeat at the hands of Panama while they went down fighting against Uruguay, losing by a solitary goal that cemented their exit. To make matters worse for the States, the historic defeat against Canada will galvanize them into making a few significant changes for the side, one of which can be the inclusion of Mauricio Pochettino to the team.
