Karen Khachanov is set to take on Ben Shelton in the final of the Canadian Open. The former is in his first ATP Masters 1000 final since 2018, while the latter is in his maiden final at that level on tour. Both players have also earned a surprising run to the championship match, particularly for Khachanov, who has failed to reach a final this season before arriving at Toronto.
Before the Canadian Open, the Russian star’s best run in 2025 was the Barcelona Open and Terra Wortmann semi-final. But that isn’t the same for Shelton, who has been to one final previously, and that came at the Munich Open. But he lost the title to Alexander Zverev in straight sets. He will now hope to win the biggest title of his career.

Karen Khachanov vs. Ben Shelton: Match Preview
Karen Khachanov arrived in Toronto at the back of a quarter-finals run at the Wimbledon Championship. He kicked off his North American hard-court campaign by beating Juan Pablo Ficovich in the second round before coming from a set down to Emilio Nava in the third and then ending Casper Ruud’s run at the tournament.
In the quarter-finals, he defeated 26th seed Alex Michelsen 6-4, 7-6(3) to go up against Alexander Zverev. Despite not being at his best against Zverev, the 29-year-old did well to dominate the game, except for the second set. But Zverev’s 44 unforced errors helped Khachanov claim the victory 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4).

Ben Shelton, on the other hand, had reached the Washington Open semi-finals before losing to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets. At the Canadian Open, the American star enjoyed a routine win against Adrian Mannarino before overcoming Brandon Nakashima in three sets. He then fought hard to beat Flavio Cobolli in 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(1).
The American star continued with his excellent form on the court, beating Washington Open champion Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-4 to reach his first Masters 1000 semi-final. He then faced Taylor Fritz, playing his best tennis to upset the second seed 6-4, 6-3 to reach the final of the Canadian Open in Toronto.
Karen Khachanov vs. Ben Shelton: Match Prediction
Karen Khachanov will face Ben Shelton for the second time on tour. They faced each other first in the round of 32 at Indian Wells in March and the American star claimed the victory in straight sets. Shelton will be hoping to do the same over Khachanov when they face off again in the final of the Canadian Open.

The American star’s game has been on a whole new level since the Wimbledon Championship. He has become better at his service and now wins long rallies. Against Fritz, he was so effective at that that he didn’t drop a single serve during their clash. He won 86 percent of his first serve points and hit 21 winners, compared to his 27 unforced errors.
However, when it comes to experience, Khachanov is the better player over Shelton. The Russian star has won seven ATP titles, five more than Shelton. He’s also known as a powerful forehand hitter on the court, but he has struggled against top 10 players on tour this season. His win against Alexander Zverev was his first top-10 win of the year.
Match prediction: Ben Shelton to win in three sets.
