The ‘Greedy’ singer, Tate McRae, has landed in a fresh controversy ahead of the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony in San Siro Stadium tomorrow. The controversy centered on McRae’s presence in an advert for the Milan Cortina Games 2026 along with Team USA athletes.

In the promo spot for NBC and Peacock, McRae comes across an owl while skiing, cuts the fourth media, and introduces herself to the camera and the owl. She later explains that she’s headed for the opening ceremony in Milan and explains that she’s quite eager to meet Team USA. In the video, she’s heard saying that she’ll be watching “America’s Best,” in different events, and Lindsey Vonn’s comeback.

Though McRae currently lives in the States, she’s Canadian. Canada has been the USA’s friendly neighbor up north for decades, but the recent geopolitical shifts have fluctuated those feelings between the two nations.

Donald Trump recalled the invitation to the “Board of Peace” to the Canadian prime minister, Mark Carney, after the latter’s statements on the weaponization of economic integration and global power politics.

Yeah, amidst the recent tensions, it wasn’t shocking that McRae’s presence in the promo didn’t go down well with her fellow citizens. They expressed their disappointment in her choice, a sizable number chiding her decision to support another nation as a money grab.

There’s also the precedent with McRae that has surfaced in the aftermath of the NBC promo drop. Last year, she made the headlines when she revealed that “Canada doesn’t feel like home anymore, which is weird. Not like the country but just like Calgary, where I’m from, feels like a little less homey than L.A.”

She has since responded to the growing backlash with an Instagram story. In the story, McRae has put up a childhood picture of her with the Canadian flag, along with the caption, “Y’all know I’m Canada down.”

Canada has had a cruising start to the Winter Olympics with two wins in Curling Mixed Doubles

As the second-biggest contingent at the Milan Cortina Games, Canada has its eyes set on bettering their all-time high total medal finish in Beijing. Amid the high in total medals, they had also recorded a 30-year low in gold medal finishes.

The Winter Olympics, though the opening ceremony is still a day away, have unofficially started with the curling mixed doubles event at Cortina Olympic Stadium. Brett Gallant and Joselyn Peterman, representing the Great White North, have started the season with trailblazing wins against Czechia and Norway.

The 2019 World Mixed Doubles Curling champion pair and real-life couple started the season with a strong win over Czechia. The Canadians were eager to put scores on the board, securing a 5-0 lead by End 2.

After a strong power play performance in End 6, scoring three points off it, the Canadians had cruised to a 6-point lead with two ends remaining. The game had an early end after the Czechs had a near-impossible-to-recover 5-point deficit ahead of Game 8.

The Norwegians were a bit of a challenge. Kristin Skaslien and Magnus Nedregotten were tactical with their plays. The match extended into End 8 with the Canadians winning the game by a margin of 6-3. Sending the silver medalists from four years to their third loss in the preliminaries might have boosted their confidence before facing the reigning champions, Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner. As of writing, the game’s underway at the Cortina Stadium.

Team USA has also gained two wins in two games, defeating Estonia in today’s first round of matches and Switzerland in the afternoon window. The Americans have no games today and face the Canadians tomorrow before the opening ceremony.
