‘Candid’ Drew Bledsoe calls Tom Brady the worst backup quarterback in NFL history

During the Patriots Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Wednesday, Bledsoe joked that Brady was not supposed to be the starter because he was still in the squad.

Drew Bledsoe roasted Tom Brady even though it wasn’t that kind of a show. It was the opposite, as the New England Patriots officially included the 46-year-old retired quarterback in the Hall of Fame.

On Wednesday, Foxborough saw Jay-Z kicking off an exciting afternoon for Patriots fans as they eagerly waited to witness Brady wearing the iconic Red Blazer. Several former players, including Drew Bledsoe, Rob Gronkowski, Randy Moss, Julian Edelman, and former head coach Bill Belichick, were in attendance alongside owner Robert Kraft.

Bledsoe was in the mood for mischief. He was the unfortunate quarterback whose injury paved the way for Tom Brady’s 20-year-long career. Even though it was a special moment for Brady, Bledsoe did not want to pass up on the opportunity to roast him.

When host Mike Tirico handed him the microphone, Bledsoe gave his two cents on how he felt of Brady replacing him as the starter.

[You were] the worst backup quarterback in the history of the NFL. You never understood that when I got healthy, you were supposed to go sit the hell down.
Drew Bledsoe said

The crowd, including Brady, started laughing at the joke. Regardless, if Bledsoe wasn’t injured and other quarterbacks were available, then the 199th pick in the 2000 draft wouldn’t have had the chance to showcase his talent.

During Brady’s roast on Netflix, Bledsoe took a dig at his former backup, claiming that unlike him, Brady was never a first-round pick or a backup steal his place.

Drew Bledsoe once thought Tom Brady would never be a starter in the NFL

When the Patriots picked Brady, he was a skinny kid with below-average speed and movement but with a good arm. On the other hand, Bledsoe was the face of the Patriots, leading them to a Super Bowl game before signing a 10-year deal.

Despite Brady telling owner Robert Kraft drafting him was the best decision in his life, few thought he could make it big in the NFL. One of them was Drew Bledsoe.

In a special interview with ESPN, the four-time Pro Bowler revealed everyone’s first impression of the Michigan graduate.

I really like this kid [but] He's never gonna be a starter. He's gonna be Jason Garrett or one of those guys who's just going to be around forever.
Drew Bledsoe said

Bledsoe took a liking to Brady and even invited him for dinner.

We really liked the kid [and] we kind of brought him in. He was over at our house for dinner probably once a week.

Drew Bledsoe added

However, he also admitted that perhaps no one besides Brady could have predicted that he would go on to win seven rings.

[He is] maybe the greatest of all time.

In the end, Brady became a 5-time Super Bowl MVP, 3-time NFL MVP, twice Offensive Player of the Year, 5-time NFL Passing Touchdown leader, and 4-time Passing yards leader. During the induction ceremony, Kraft announced that they retired Brady’s No. 12 jersey.
