Epic collapses in football seem to be the latest trend, as fans witnessed two in the space of a couple of hours on Sunday night. The Miami Dolphins lost despite leading by 17 points, while the Arizona Cardinals bizarrely lost to the worst team in football, the Tennessee Titans, while leading by 15 after halftime.

Quarterback Kyler Murray orchestrated three rushing touchdowns on either side of the first two quarters to make life difficult for the visitors. Michael Carter scored with a 1-yard run, followed by Murray’s 12-yard scamper, before Zonovan Knight bulldozed his way into the Titans’ end zone from 1 yard.

Tennessee kicker Joey Slye’s two field goal completions from 44 and 51 yards kept his team in the hunt. The Titans waited for a signal to start their comeback, and it appeared three minutes into the fourth quarter.

Emari Demercado raced past the Titans’ d-line for a home call, but the dynamic running back slowed down, which allowed L’Jarius Sneed to catch up to him. However, Sneed’s presence wasn’t required, as Demercado released the ball before reaching the goal.

A switch flipped in the Titans. All of a sudden, they went from a disgruntled unit to a well-drilled squad. Arizona helped them as well.

The Cardinals’ comedy of errors paved the way for an unlikely Titans comeback

Jonathan Gannon’s Cardinals were coming off two straight losses against divisional opponents. This made the Titans fixture all the more crucial for the NFC West franchise in its attempt to save its season.

Unfortunately, luck didn’t favor the Cardinals. Tony Pollard’s touchdown run shifted the lead to Tennessee, but an unusual sequence four minutes before the end completely changed the outcome.

Rookie Titans quarterback Cam Ward overthrew a pass straight to Cardinals’ Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, which he failed to keep under control. The ball slipped out and then pinballed its way into the end zone before veteran WR Tyler Lockett made sure to pounce on it before it went out of bounds. It was given as a Tennessee touchdown.

In the final drive of the game, Ward led his team 71 yards inside enemy territory to present Slye with the chance to seal the victory. He smashed a field goal from 29 yards before the clock hit zero and won the Titans’ first game of the season 22-21.

Murray and the Arizona Cardinals became the first team since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger to lose three straight games on game-winning field goals.

Murray finished with 23 completions from 31 attempts for 220 yards, 4 carries for 25 yards, and 1 rushing touchdown.

I don’t really know what to think about that. I don’t even know. I really don’t even know. That’s ‘How to Lose a Game 101.’ I don’t know. It was crazy.

Kyler Murray said after the game (H/T: ESPN)

There’s still a lot of football left to be played. At present, the Cardinals sit at the bottom of the West with a 2-3 record. They are on the road in Week 6 to face off against the 4-1 Indianapolis Colts.
