The former Barcelona and Spain defender, Carles Puyol believes Messi will go down as the best footballer in the world. Puyol’s remarks come as Messi (Barcelona) broke Pele’s record of registering the most number of goals for a single club.

The Argentine striker recorded his 644th strike for Barcelona, surpassing Pele’s record of 643 goals for Santos.

“If you ask me who Michael Jordan is, I will say that he is the best basketball player in history,” Puyol told Goal, crowning him the undisputed King of Football.

“I think Messi will have the same status – the best footballer of all time. It is also talked about whether Michael Jordan is the best in history, and these are opinions, and sometimes it is difficult to be objective. It is difficult for a Real Madrid fan to recognise that Messi is the best.

“We have been lucky to have him but I really say, taking away the feeling of being a cule, that the numbers are there, these have not been invented and they show that he is the best. I’m confident that a Barcelona led by Leo will continue to win titles,” Puyol added.

“He can still do something with the national team too. Even though I’m not Argentine, I’d be very happy if he did. I think he deserves it, and I know he’s looking to do it.”

“He has already broken all of the records at Barcelona,” Puyol continued. “I don’t know if anyone can compete with him in the future. He’s set the bar very high.”
