On Friday (October 31), Ugo Humbert denied Carlos Alcaraz the chance to lift his first Paris Masters title when he defeated the Spaniard 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 in the fourth round. After losing his first match against the Frenchman in their three encounters, Alcaraz said he gave everything during the contest.
Although Alcaraz is not a fan of fast courts, he didn’t think the court was the only reason behind his defeat. He lauded the 26-year-old for not letting him ‘get rhythms into the match’ and stopped him from playing ‘good tennis’.
Alcaraz had lifted just one ATP Masters 1000 title (Indian Wells) this season. Having added four titles to his trophy cabinet in 2024, including the French Open and the Wimbledon Championships, Alcaraz will aim to triumph at the ATP Finals, set to be held in Turin.
Carlos Alcaraz praises French crowd after Paris Masters defeat
Players who are not French know very well how the crowd in France gets immersed during the match and root for the home players. Carlos Alcaraz also felt the same as from the very beginning there were cheers for Ugo Humbert. The 21-year-old appreciated the crowd in Bercy for supporting him even though he was playing against a home favorite.
Before Humbert, the four-time Grand Slam champion registered his first win in Bercy in two years when he defeated Nicolas Jarry to kick-start his campaign at the final Masters 1000 of the season. Humbert, who was defeated by Alexander Zverev in the Round of 32 in last year’s Paris Masters, will now lock horns with Jordan Thompson in the quarterfinals.
