Carlos Alcaraz has been dubbed to take over from where his idol Rafael Nadal left on the court. The Spaniard recently claimed his third Grand Slam title in Paris after overcoming Alexander Zverev in five sets. However, his agent Albert Molina revealed the sacrifice his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero had to make for him.
Agent Molina had heard of an 11-year-old Alcaraz who was said to be a special talent in tennis. Despite still competing in Murcia, Alcaraz’s father Carlos Sr. was taking his son to every local tennis competition he could afford. Alcaraz’s talent then drew Molina to him and the agent began to follow the youngster’s game as he traveled to different cities in Spain for tennis tournaments.
When Alcaraz turned 13, Molina then met his parents and told them about his project for their son. They agreed with him but they needed a top professional coach to help Alcaraz polish his talent. Luckily for them, Juan Carlos Ferrero had just ended his eight-month partnership with Alexander Zverev in July 2017. Ferrero was hesitant because his partnership with Zverev was only eight months and he claimed he suffered disrespect during his time with the then-No. 3
Agent Molina had to convince Ferrero about Alcaraz which he accepted after watching Alcaraz play a junior championship. Besides that, Ferrero had to sacrifice not being paid as a top coach just to coach Alcaraz.
He makes the effort and invests in the future. When he accepts and starts working with Carlos, he is aware that he is not going to enter or be paid like Ferrero, as a coach of a top player . Carlos invests in the future. And since we have a very good relationship… This is based a lot on personal relationships. Investing in the future is nice in the moment but then people can fail you. And then the family has been very noble and always complied with what was said.Albert Molina said via Relevo.
Juan Carlos Ferrero has been working with Alcaraz since 2015. He has helped the 21-year-old win three Grand Slams and five Masters 1000 titles.
Carlos Alcaraz shifts focus to the Queen’s, Wimbledon and Paris Olympics
Carlos Alcaraz is focused on playing Queen’s Tournament, Wimbledon, and the Paris Olympics. The Spaniard won his first French Open title recently and is aiming to take a rest before he kickstarts his grass season.
He will be hoping to defend his Queen’s and Wimbledon titles as he knows how to adapt to grass swing pretty well.
I will play in Queen’s, Wimbledon and the Olympic Games. That’s my closest calendar. If everything goes as planned, of course.Carlos Alcaraz said via Marca
Recently, there were reports that Rafael Nadal’s team is trying to lure Alcaraz into playing at the Hamburg Open so they could prepare for the highly anticipated Olympics doubles. However, there is no conclusion yet from both teams.
