Joao Fonseca has been one of the standout youngsters this season following his exceptional breakthrough in the ATP circuit. He began the year outside the Top 100, but is currently ranked in the top 25 of the ATP rankings. Carlos Alcaraz has predicted that the Brazilian teenager will do big things in the near future.
The 2025 season was just Fonseca’s second professional year on the court. Last year, he had struggled to achieve a consistent performance on the court as it was his debut year. But the 19-year-old took his game to another level this season, winning his first two tour-level titles in Buenos Aires and Basel.
The young tennis star first announced himself on the world stage during the Australian Open in January, where he earned his first career top 10 win after beating Andrey Rublev in straight sets. He then continued with the form at the Argentina Open, beating Francisco Cerundolo in the final to claim his first tour-level title.
At the French Open and Wimbledon Championships, he claimed his maiden match wins and also reached the third round of the Grand Slam tournaments. He missed the entirety of the Asian swing to give his best during the indoor hard court swing, and that paid off in Basel, where he defeated top 20 star Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final.
During an interview with O Globo, Alcaraz revealed that Fonseca could reach the top 3 of the ATP rankings in the near future. The 22-year-old added that his growth on the tour will be determined by how he handles every stage of rise:
What he has done this year is truly impressive. Breaking into the top 25 is very commendable, and I believe he will progress tremendously over the next two years. We will see how he handles the pressure, but I predict that very important things await him, and it is not out of the question that he could reach the top 3 in a while. It would be crucial for him to get there and work to remain among the best.
Nonetheless, Alcaraz and Fonseca are set to take part in an exhibition match at the Miami Invitational event in Florida on December 1. It will be their first meeting on the court, but it wouldn’t matter eventually as it is not a tour-level match. They would have met at the Laver Cup, with Fonseca representing Team World and Alcaraz, Team Europe, but that didn’t work out.
Carlos Alcaraz says Joao Fonseca is a special player on tour
Joao Fonseca’s growth on tour has made several current and former players sing his praises. In fact, some former players have compared him to the Roger Federer, while others have dubbed him as the new Gustavo Kuerten. Despite the praise, Fonseca looks focused on making sure that he becomes the player he dreams of being.

During the aforementioned interview, Carlos Alcaraz noted that the Brazilian teenager is a special player in the men’s circuit. The Spaniard added that Fonseca’s game still needs improvement, while pointing out that his forehand shots are astonishingly incredible:
He is a special player. He has astonishing power in his shots and a very good serve, which was what I struggled with the most when I entered the circuit. His forehand is also tremendous, and I think the area where he has the most room for improvement is mobility, but he will polish that little by little.
Meanwhile, Alcaraz finished the 2025 season at the top of the ATP rankings, having won eight titles and reached eleven tournament finals. He was meant to join the Spanish Davis Cup team in Bologna, but pulled out of the tournament after sustaining a significant muscle strain during his ATP Finals clash against Jannik Sinner.
