Carlos Alcaraz failed to make his mark at the ATP Finals after a shocking defeat to Casper Ruud in the first Group match in Turin. The Spaniard’s lackluster display has led to several questions surrounding his struggles playing on indoor courts.
Alcaraz has finally revealed that he lacks experience in playing in indoor events. Before he arrived in Turin following his early exit at the Paris Masters, he didn’t compete in any of the European Indoor tournaments.
On Monday (November 11), Alcaraz struggled early into the match, which gave Ruud the momentum to win the first set in thirty-six minutes. The 21-year-old did well to bounce back in the second set and took a 5-2 lead but his 26 unforced errors in the match caused Ruud to win the next five match points.
He fell to a disappointing 1-6, 5-7 loss against the Norwegian. The victory was Ruud’s first win over Alcaraz after losing the previous four meetings. During Alcaraz’s post-match conference, he revealed that his struggles on indoor courts are because he doesn’t have many indoor matches under his belt.
Alcaraz has won titles on hard, grass, and clay courts this season, a feat no ATP player achieved this year. He will hope to improve his game when he faces Andrey Rublev on Wednesday (November 13).
Carlos Alcaraz reveals the real reason behind his loss against Casper Ruud
Carlos Alcaraz will take a day to recover from his defeat against Casper Ruud. He stated that he was struggling with a stomach issue during the tie.
The 21-year-old was the favorite to top the John Newcombe Group, but after his shocking loss, it is now difficult for him to advance from the round-robin stage. During the press conference, Alcaraz admitted that the stomach issue began a few days before arriving in Turin.
Last year, Alcaraz lost his opening match at the ATP Finals but qualified for the next round after winning his next two group matches in straight sets. He will be hoping for the same fate to be repeated.
