There’s been a lot of discussion about the conditions of the courts at the Paris Masters as reports have emerged that they are the fastest in a decade in the tournament. Carlos Alcaraz, after his defeat to home favorite Ugo Humbert on Thursday (October 31) in the fourth round, questioned why such courts were prepared for the tournament.
Alcaraz faltered in the first set as he could win just one game, and although he tried to make a comeback in the second set, he failed to capitalize much on it. Humbert, who had the crowd’s support, knocked out the Spaniard when he won the third set and, with a scoreline of 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, Humbert secured a place in the quarterfinals.
After the match, when Alcaraz was asked whether he finds it difficult to play on indoor courts, the 21-year-old stated that he has played on indoor courts in the Davis Cup. Though he doesn’t want to make ‘excuses’, he thinks it’s ‘crazy’ that the courts in Bercy are the fastest on tour this season.
Humbert is now set to lock horns with Jordan Thompson on November 1 and will aim to defeat the Aussie for the first time.
Carlos Alcaraz will be bidding to win his first ATP Finals title
Carlos Alcaraz has just one ATP Masters 1000 title of the season which he lifted after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final at Indian Wells. Before the Paris Masters, Alcaraz bowed out of the Shanghai Masters when Tomas Machac beat him in the quarterfinals.
Following his defeat to Ugo Humbert, Alcaraz will be gearing up for the ATP Finals in Turin to bid for his maiden title. Last year at the ATP Finals, Alcaraz lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinals in straight sets. In 2022, he withdrew from the tournament because of an internal oblique muscle tear.
Prior to this season’s Paris Masters, Alcaraz also participated in the Six Kings Slam exhibition event but failed to take home the $6 million after defeat to Jannik Sinner in the final. Alcaraz has so far won four ATP titles, including the French Open and Wimbledon.
