Carlos Alcaraz has revealed that he is considering changing some aspects of his game following his second-round loss to Botic Van de Zandschulp at the 2024 US Open. Despite being the favorite to win the Grand Slam, he suffered a straight-sets defeat and made an early exit from the event.
Alcaraz arrived at the US Open, where he won his first Grand Slam in 2022, having won two Majors this year — French Open and Wimbledon. He then picked up the singles silver medal at the Paris Olympics after losing to Novak Djokovic in the final.
The Spaniard began his US Open campaign by beating Australian Li Tu 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. However, he then fell 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 to World No.74 Van de Zandschulp, which is his first loss to a player ranked outside the Top 15 at a Grand Slam since the 2021 French Open, when he was 18 years old and was ranked World No. 97.
After the defeat, Alcaraz revealed that he was considering changing some aspects of his game and admitted that he didn’t know what to do during the match.
After every match I felt like that, I always say the same. ‘I have to learn about it. I have to think about it.’ What I’m thinking right now is I’m not changing. That’s the problem. If I’m gonna sit here after the matches where I felt like that I couldn’t deal with it, I couldn’t change the match, or I couldn’t pick myself a little bit, but if I’m never gonna change, it’s gonna be really tough if I want to improve. I can’t say much about it.Carlos Alcaraz said at a press conference
For Van de Zandschulp, the victory over Alcaraz was the highest-ranking win of his career. He is set to face British star Jack Draper in the third round.
Carlos Alcaraz admits he lacked ideas during his loss to Botic Van de Zandschulp at US Open
Carlos Alcaraz has admitted that during his loss to Botic Van de Zandschulp at the US Open, he found it hard to control his emotions, which eventually led to his defeat. The Spaniard revealed that he found it difficult to raise his level and lacked ideas to turn the contest around.
Against Botic van de Zandschulp, the 21-year-old looked lost and panicked. He stated that he didn’t know how to manage the circumstances and admitted that his level in the match was not where he would have liked it to be.
So I was confused a little bit. I didn’t know how to manage that, how to deal with it. I couldn’t increase my level. I think my level stayed at the same point all the match, and it wasn’t enough to win the match or to give myself the chance to getting into the match or trying to give myself chances.Carlos Alcaraz said (via The Guardian)
Alcaraz will take a break following the US Open exit and will hope to turn things around before the China Open and Shanghai Masters in September.
