Carlos Alcaraz kickstarted his 2025 season with an excellent display against Alexander Shevchenko in the first round of the Australian Open. The young Spaniard is bidding to win his maiden Australian Open crown and become the youngest player to achieve a career Grand Slam. However, he knows all that will come down to hard work.
The World No.3 struck 37 winners in an aggressive display and quickly rebounded following a drop in level in the second set. He was quick to settle into the match as Shevchenko showed no resilience, leaving the 21-year-old to win the first set 6-1 in just 28 minutes. Alcaraz came out strongly in the second set despite a drop in level.
After that, the youngster took control of the game again as his Kazakhstan opponent had no answer on the court. He cruised with a convincing 6-1, 7-5, 6-1 win at Margaret Court Arena in an hour and 54 minutes. It is a solid start to his 2025 season, despite having opted to play in a pair of exhibition matches during the off-season.
During his on-court interview, he was asked what was success secret; he revealed that it was hard work.
Alcaraz will face Japan’s Yoshihto Nishioka in the second round of the Australian Open. The Japanese star earned his place in the competition after a hard-fought victory against qualifier Aziz Dougaz 3-6, 6-4 ,7-6(3),6-3.
Carlos Alcaraz excited about working with Juan Carlos Ferrero for the sixth straight year
Carlos Alcaraz is yet to win the Australian Open. His best result at the event came last season when he reached the quarterfinals before losing to Alexander Zverev. He will likely face the German star at this year’s edition if he beats Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.
After Alcaraz’s first-round win against Alexander Shevchenko, he revealed that he was having great fun with Juan Carlos Ferrero as his coach. The Spaniard has developed a strong relationship with the coach since they began their collaboration six years ago.
Alcaraz’s goal at the Australian Open is to win the title for the first time in his career. But that will come at the cost of making sure he plays his best at every match. He has crossed the first hurdle in the first round and there’s still more to go before the final.
