Eyeing a three-peat at Indian Wells, fans often wonder about the reason for Carlos Alcaraz’s success at the Californian desert, whether it is the court conditions, the time of the season, or perhaps the magic of the venue. After his Round of 16 victory over Francisco Cerundolo, the Spaniard credited his entourage as the reason for him consistently performing so well at Indian Wells.
Alcaraz has been coached by Juan Carlos Ferrero since 2019. Their partnership has to date produced 17 tournament wins on the ATP Tour, including four Grand Slam titles and five Masters 1000 titles. Their partnership has been widely praised, with Ferrero also winning the ATP Coach of the Year Award in 2022.
In 2023, Alcaraz also said that he considered Ferrero a “second father”. In December 2024 it was announced that Samuel Lopez, a former member of Ferrero’s own coaching team, would be joining Alcaraz’s team to work under Ferrero as a second coach.
I have a great team behind me, and I’m also lucky enough to bring my family with me to tournaments, although I think tennis is still a very solitary sport. Sometimes, when you feel calm in the place you’re going to, it’s a great thing. That’s exactly what I feel here; I feel at peace, everything is peaceful, I feel great with the people around me. That’s what makes Indian Wells a beautiful place for me, maybe that’s why I always play my best tennis here.
Carlos Alcaraz told the Indian Wells press
A three-peat at Indian Wells has so far only been accomplished by Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. Carlos Alcaraz won his last two titles at Indian Wells by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the finals. This year he will face Jack Draper in the semifinals in what will be their fifth meeting on court.
They last met earlier this year at the Australian Open, where Draper sadly had to retire during their fourth-round match. Akin to his semifinal opponent, Alcaraz has not dropped a set so far on his way to the Indian Wells semifinal. The winner of this match will face either Medvedev or Holger Rune in the finals.
Carlos Alcaraz will face Jack Draper in the 2025 Indian Wells semifinal
Carlos Alcaraz leads the head-to-head between him and Jack Draper 3-1. Their upcoming semifinal match will also mark their second meeting at Indian Wells, with their first meeting in the Californian desert being in 2023, which Alcaraz won. On his way to the semifinals this year, Alcaraz has defeated Quentin Halys, Denis Shapovalov, Grigor Dimitrov, and Francisco Cerundolo.

Meanwhile, Jack Draper has also enjoyed a fairly good season so far. Prior to his Indian Wells campaign, he reached the finals of the Qatar Open, where he lost to Andrey Rublev. At Indian Wells, Draper has defeated several higher-ranked players like Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz on his way to the semifinals.
Carlos Alcaraz’s 2025 season has been decent so far
Carlos Alcaraz started off his 2025 season with the Australian Open. The World No. 3 was aiming to become the youngest man to achieve a career Grand Slam, a distinction currently held by Rafael Nadal, who achieved this feat at the age of 24 after winning the US Open in 2010. However, a young Alcaraz was stopped at the quarterfinals by a 37-year-old, injury-marred Novak Djokovic, from achieving his fifth Grand Slam.

After the Australian Open, the 21-year-old then went on to make his debut at the Rotterdam Open. He won his first indoor title with this tournament, after defeating Alex de Minaur in the finals. Before arriving at Indian Wells for his title defense, Alcaraz also made his debut at the Qatar Open, where he faced defeat to Jiri Lehecka in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
