Is the era of the Big 3 really over after Carlos Alcaraz‘s three-set Wimbledon final win over Novak Djokovic? While fans and tennis pundits’ opinions vary, the 21-year-old Spaniard doesn’t think so.

Djokovic, who played Wimbledon after nursing his knee injury, advanced to his first final of 2024 and had no answer to Alcaraz’s strong serves and quick movements on the Centre Court. In just three sets, Djokovic lost the game, making Alcaraz only the fifth player to secure a Grand Slam final win over the Serb in straight sets. Although Alcaraz secured the win easily without breaking any sweat, he worked hard all the time to challenge Djokovic.

I’ve seen many people saying it’s a generational change, a new era, a change of guard because of Sunday’s match, but in the end, I don’t really see it that way. We try to work as hard as possible to challenge Djokovic. As hard as possible to try to be there every time we can.

For more than two decades, Djokovic, and the other members of the Big 3- Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal-ruled on the tennis courts, especially in the Grand Slam events. Federer retired in 2022 while Nadal has suffered a slump in form, plus his injury woes don’t seem to leave him, and, owing to these worries, Nadal thought it best not to feature in Wimbledon.

Djokovic hasn’t won a tournament this season and his trophyless streak continues after the Wimbledon defeat. All these players, except Federer obviously, will play at Roland Garros once again for the Paris Olympics.

Carlos Alcaraz is on cloud nine after Wimbledon victory

It won’t be an exaggeration to say that Carlos Alcaraz is currently at the center of attention in the tennis world. But the 21-year-old boy from a small town in Murcia is still not used to what he is experiencing and is finding it hard to normalize them.

In the end, I’m still amazed by the things I’m experiencing, the things I’m achieving, also by the people I get to meet along the way.
Carlos Alcaraz told the Spanish media

Alcaraz’s next assignment will be to take home the Olympic gold medal with Rafael Nadal. Nadal is in Bastad for the clay-court event where he is playing singles and doubles. He made his first appearance in the tournament since last playing in 2005.
