Carlos Alcaraz managed to get past a resilient Frances Tiafoe to keep his Wimbledon title defence alive. After reaching the third round without losing a single set, he came rather close to a shock defeat against the American.

Both players went toe to toe from the start and it was Tiafoe who struck the first blow, winning the first set with the help of a timely break towards the end. Alcaraz fought back immediately to level the scores.

With momentum on his side, the Spaniard dominated Tiafoe in the final set to win the match 5-7, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-2. In the post-match interview, he praised the American and stated that he found it tough to play his natural game against him.

Obviously it’s a big challenge playing Frances. As I said many times he’s a really talented player. Tough to face. He showed it once again that he deserves to be at the top. He deserves to fight for big things. It was really difficult for me to adapt my game and find solutions and try to put him in trouble.
