Following his Olympic silver medal and US Open second-round exit, Carlos Alcaraz is excited about making his Laver Cup debut. In his first match, the Spaniard will be playing doubles along with Alexander Zverev on September 20 at the Uber Arena in Berlin.
Alcaraz is representing Team Europe, captained by Swedish legend Bjorn Borg, who is leading the team for the final time. Apart from Alcaraz and Zverev, the team also has Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud, Grigor Dimitrov, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
With my partners, we used to fight against each other during the whole tournament. Now in this tournament, we're going to cheer on each other. It's going to be a beautiful thing that I'm going to try to enjoy, but I'm going to try to learn from them as well as much as I can.Carlos Alcaraz said at the press conference
The pair of Alcaraz and Zverev will be locking horns with Team World’s Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton. The German is also set to play in the Laver Cup for the fifth time.
Carlos Alcaraz wants to impress Roger Federer while the latter wants to apologize
Roger Federer, the co-founder of the Laver Cup, who met Carlos Alcaraz five years ago, has already talked about his excitement about watching the 21-year-old play for the first time. The 20-time Grand Slam champion also joked about apologizing to the Spaniard for a Wimbledon mistake when the latter was 16 years old. Alcaraz, on the other hand, wants to make sure that Federer enjoys his matches.
I will try to be ready for that time, try to put on a show, to put a good point in the match, just to make him enjoy watching the match. But for me, it's great to hear those words from him.Carlos Alcaraz said at the press conference
Alcaraz called that meeting with Federer at the 2019 Wimbledon a “unique” moment, and he even has a photo with the Swiss maestro in his room. For Federer, however, it was a different experience as he admitted that he wanted to train with Juan Carlos Ferrero instead of Alcaraz.
While Federer retired in 2022 after playing the last match of his career at the Laver Cup in a doubles match with Rafael Nadal, Alcaraz is being touted to join Federer and the other members of the Big 3 with Grand Slam wins in the future. The youngster has already four Major titles, winning his third and fourth this year at the French Open and Wimbledon.
