Juan Carlos Ferrero revealed during a recent interview with Marca in the aftermath of his split with Carlos Alcaraz how “hurt” he was that his partnership with the youngster couldn’t be continued. Ferrero said the failed contract negotiation was the reason behind the split.

He reportedly was given just 48 hours to accept or reject the new contract. His salary was also reduced, but that was not the main cause of disagreement. Ferrero did not reveal what exactly the clauses in the new contract were that he did not agree with.

The 2003 French Open champion also revealed that things could have been solved, and he could have stayed had they sat together and communicated the whole thing better. He also said that Alcaraz’s “inner circle” deemed it best to part ways.

Several tennis insiders are revealing that Alcaraz’s father, Carlos Alcaraz Gonzalez, makes major decisions regarding his son’s career. Gonzalez chose not to comment on the situation. He told EFE:

Everyone is free to give their opinion based on what they know.

Alcaraz hired the former World No.1 back in 2019 when he was 16. Under Ferrero, the 22-year-old lifted his 24 tour-level titles, which also include his six Majors. Alcaraz also reached the top of the rankings table under the guidance of his now former coach.

Juan Carlos Ferrero shares the unforgettable moments he cherishes while with Carlos Alcaraz

Juan Carlos Ferrero, during that interview with Marca, was asked about the moments he remembers the most while with Carlos Alcaraz. The 45-year-old revealed that he cherishes the moments a lot when Alcaraz was a teenager, their training sessions, tournaments, and going everywhere together. Ferrero remembers the growth, the experiences, and the results.

I often told him that I missed that era of Challengers, of smaller tournaments where you could really see that drive to grow and to climb so many places. Then, when you’re at the top, the goals are different, and you don’t have as many places to climb or as many things to teach. You approach it more as a gradual learning process.

Juan Carlos Ferrero said

The first Grand Slam tournament that Alcaraz won under Ferrero was the 2022 US Open, by defeating Casper Ruud. The win helped him become the youngest men’s World No.1 in the Open Era (he was 19).

In the beginning, the learning is always faster and more generous. As we progressed through those stages, all the important tournaments that followed became unforgettable moments. Every Grand Slam we won. Especially the last French Open, which was the most challenging. I’ll focus on all the positive aspects.

Juan Carlos Ferrero added

In 2022, Ferrero was given the ATP Coach of the Year award, while Alcaraz won the ATP Player of the Year. Both of them won the two titles this year, as Alcaraz finished the season with eight titles from 11 finals- the most on the men’s tour this year.

Two of these titles also include the French Open and the US Open, which he won by defeating his arch-rival Jannik Sinner. Alcaraz will continue to work alongside coach Samuel Lopez, who joined his team last December.

Next year, all the focus will shift toward the Australian Open, where Alcaraz will be bidding to complete the Career Grand Slam. The Spanish ace has never reached the semifinal of the first Major of the season.

In the previous two years, he made the quarterfinals, losing both matches in four sets to Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic, respectively. Before the Australian Open, Alcaraz will be playing an exhibition event in Incheon, South Korea, against Sinner.
