Spanish tennis ace Carlos Alcaraz is known for his impressive gameplay. While he mostly sticks to conventional shot-making, he also tries new shots now and then, something his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero does not like. Alcaraz has revealed how he avoids eye contact with Ferrero whenever he tries such a shot during a match.
Akcaraz fears getting a “slap” from his coach if he tries anything risky and funny. In a recent interview, he stated that Ferrero’s presence in the box ensures he does not try too many risky shots.
Many times I feel more restrained than I should because of him. Because of what might happen to me later. Yes, I notice it, yes. Every time I do one of those shots that are not supposed to be taken, the ones for fun, sometimes I don't even look at it because I know that he's going to give me a slap from the box.Carlos Alcaraz told ABC
However, this does not stop Alcaraz from putting some tricks on the court. The Spaniard finds ways to play some out-of-the-box shots as he wants to enjoy his game.
Despite fears of getting slapped, Carlos Alcaraz needs Juan Carlos Ferrero
Although Carlos Alcaraz feels restrained by his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero‘s presence in the box, the Spaniard admits that he desperately needs him. After his French Open win, Alcaraz said that sometimes his head goes blank and he is unable to decide what to do. In those situations, his coach comes to the rescue.
Alcaraz said that he blindly applies the tips shared by his coach from the box because it is much better to judge a contest from the outside.
Honestly, in the vast majority of cases, I apply what Juan Carlos advises me to do. From outside the court, we can see much better… So I apply. There are plenty of moments where I don't really know what to do on the courtCarlos Alcaraz admitted
The 21-year-old has received immense support from his coach in crunch situations. He has won four Grand Slam titles so far, with Ferrero in the box every time. However, he will be missing his coach at the 2024 Paris Olympics as it has been confirmed that Ferrero will not be present in Paris.
