- Carlos Alcaraz faced backlash for a claim on his Nike bag stating he is the "youngest ever to win the 4 of them," which critics argue ignores female tennis legends.
- Fans expressed disappointment, stating the message should have specified "youngest male" to acknowledge Steffi Graf and Serena Williams' achievements.
- Alcaraz continues his campaign in Miami after a recent victory over Joao Fonseca, aiming for his second title in the tournament.
Carlos Alcaraz was on top of the world when he defeated Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open, with the victory making him the youngest man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam. He achieved this at the age of 22, surpassing Rafael Nadal‘s record.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion accomplished the feat at the age of 24 when he defeated Novak Djokovic in the 2010 US Open. But the record, if both men’s and women’s tours are considered, belongs to Steffi Graf.
The German completed the feat at 19 in 1988. Serena Williams achieved this when she was 21. So when Alcaraz carried a Nike bag at the Miami Open with this message: “Youngest ever to win the 4 of them“, he found himself on the receiving end of criticism.
Fans slam Carlos Alcaraz for the youngest Career Grand Slam claim
Fans criticized Nike for its message on Alcaraz’s bag, saying it was poorly researched and should have added the word ‘male’ after ‘youngest’. Some said the message was disrespectful toward the two WTA legends.

These kind of things are what makes me happy and proud to be a Jannik Sinner fan 👍 #MiamiOpen

I think it’s so sad Carlos has to tell everyone who he is. Tattoos. Words. That’s not humility as everyone claims. That’s arrogance.

The greats before him never had to tell people who they were. People knew because they were legends. And legends don’t need any introduction

Alcaraz is bidding to win his second title in Miami, having won the second Sunshine Doubles title in 2022 by beating Casper Ruud. But last year, he suffered an opening-round exit.
Before Miami, Alcaraz saw his 16-match winning streak end at the hands of eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells semifinal. After his Australian Open triumph, Alcaraz continued his winning ways, clinching the Qatar Open for the first time by defeating Arthur Fils.
Carlos Alcaraz says Joao Fonseca reminds him of himself
Alcaraz got his campaign in Miami underway by defeating Joao Fonseca in what was their first head-to-head meeting on the tour. The seven-time Grand Slam champion registered a 6-4, 6-4 victory and later at the press conference said Fonseca reminds him a lot of himself.

He reminds me an awful lot of myself when I was his age and just starting out on the circuit. I’d say he should learn to pick the right option. Sometimes he fluffs a few shots, easy balls, because he doesn’t choose the right strokes, the ball to play in certain situations. I’m convinced he’ll learn it in the not-too-distant future. Playing against the world number one and two in consecutive tournaments will give him that feedback he needs, and we’ll see him improve soon.
It was the second time Fonseca competed in Miami. On his debut run last year, he lost in the third round. Fonseca’s best performance at a Masters 1000 event was in this year’s Indian Wells, where eventual champion Jannik Sinner beat him after tough straight sets.
So far in his career, Fonseca has won two tour-level titles. He lifted the 2025 Argentina Open against Francisco Cerundolo, following which, he clinched the Swiss Indoors against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Fonseca failed to defend his title in Buenos Aires, losing to Alejandro Tabilo in the fourth round. Later in Rio, he won his first doubles title along with veteran Marcelo Melo.
Alcaraz has set up his third-round meeting with home favorite Sebastian Korda, who beat Camilo Ugo Carabelli. The Murcia native has so far clinched eight Masters 1000 titles, the last of which he won by defeating Sinner at the 2025 Cincinnati Masters. Sinner is bidding to complete the Sunshine Doubles.
After the two Masters 1000s, Alcaraz will be bidding to defend three clay-court titles he won in Monte Carlo, Rome, and Paris. In the latter two events, Alcaraz defeated the four-time Grand Slam champion. At the French Open, Alcaraz will also be aiming to complete the three-peat.
