Carlos Alcaraz‘s hairstyles have always been the talk of the town. He is fond of experimenting with his hair and understands perfectly well that his fans are pretty crazy about his looks.

Not just his fans, but even former and current players are enjoying his hairstyles. The Spaniard has grown out his thick, wavy hair and is using a hairband to keep it from falling over his forehead.

But along with his hair, something else about his look has taken the tennis world, well, as the phrase goes, by storm. Alcaraz is sporting a mustache.

Why? Because when Alcaraz celebrated his Japan Open after defeating Jiri Lehecka, a member of his team yelled, “Bigotes para todos!” This translates to, “Moustaches for everyone!” And after his opening-round win over Juan Manuel Cerundolo at the Shanghai Masters, the 23-year-old wrote ‘Moustache team!’ on the camera lens. Later during the on-court interview, he revealed the reason behind his new look.

Yes, I’m keeping it. It’ll stay for a week. I’ve always wanted to step onto the court at least once with a mustache. Before Tokyo, it went like this: ‘Alright, if I win the tournament, we all have to grow mustaches.’ Now I’m playing in Shanghai with a mustache. So, I think it’s going to be fun. We’re laughing around, we’re having fun with it. So, the mustache is here to stay.

Alcaraz is bidding to win the Shanghai Masters for the first time. He is competing in Shanghai for the third time in his career, after debuting in 2023. The following year, he reached the quarterfinals and skipped the tournament last year due to injury problems.

Alcaraz is playing in a Masters 1000 event for the fourth time this season, after appearing in Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte Carlo. He reached the final in Monte Carlo and lost his No.1 title after defeat to arch-rival Jannik Sinner.

Carlos Alcaraz says he had doubts about his level after defending his title in Tokyo

Carlos Alcaraz has become the first player to defend his title in Tokyo since Pete Sampras in 1993-94. It was his second singles tournament since his return to tennis after his wrist injury. At the US Open, he competed as the defending champion, only to lose a five-set thriller to eventual runner-up Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals.

I don’t want to take anything for granted, to be honest. I just really wanted to win everything. I didn’t know if I was going to win the tournament this soon or if I was going to win a tournament this season. I think this tournament, I was way far from my best level, I would say. But in terms of finding solutions and playing the best level that I could in the most important moments, I think it was a great week.

In Shanghai, the seven-time Grand Slam champion is chasing his fourth title of the season. Before his Tokyo win, he clinched the Australian Open and the Qatar Open.

So I’m really happy about it, and I’m really happy about lifting the trophy in my second official tournament since the injury, and hopefully it’s not going to be the last one this season. I’m going to try to keep going.

Alcaraz will next be locking horns with Zizou Bergs, who went past 32nd-seeded Ignacio Buse in the previous round. The World No.3 last won a Masters 1000 title at the 2025 Cincinnati Masters after receiving a walkover from Jannik Sinner.
