Carlos Alcaraz is all set to make his Laver Cup debut, but his idol, Rafael Nadal, is not in Berlin, where the tournament kick-starts on September 20. Several fans of the tennis community thought the Laver Cup was going to be the last tournament that Nadal would play before his retirement, just like what his longtime rival Roger Federer did back in 2022.

Nadal, however, withdrew from the event. He has been dealing with fitness issues which have also affected his campaigns on the ATP Tour this year, as he even lost in the first round of the French Open, which he has won a record 14 times.

Ahead of the latest edition of the Laver Cup, fellow Spaniard, Alcaraz, said that he wanted Nadal to be a part of Team Europe and also revealed what his Davis Cup captain David Ferrer talked about the 22-time Grand Slam champion.

I heard David say that if Rafa was there, he would go to death with him. I hope I'm also physically fit to be able to go to Malaga. It's something that I'm particularly excited about, and I hope Rafa is there too.
Carlos Alcaraz told Marca

Nadal featured in the Laver Cup back in 2022 when he paired up with Federer for the latter’s farewell match. Alcaraz, on the other hand, teamed up with Germany’s Alexander Zverev, and on September 20, they will be locking horns with Team World’s American pair of Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton

Carlos Alcaraz recalls the unique experience of meeting Roger Federer for the first time

Carlos Alcaraz met Roger Federer just once, back in 2019 at Wimbledon. The moment was so precious to him that he had a photo with Federer in his room and reminisced about that time in that same interview with Marca.

I was training today and Roger was in the gym, but I haven't seen him. I hope to see him in the next few days. I remember Wimbledon training as if it were yesterday. I will never forget it. It was a unique moment.
Carlos Alcaraz said

Though the meeting is etched in the memories of Alcaraz, for Federer, it was of no importance, as he said in a recent interview, that when his coach asked him to train with Alcaraz at the 2019 Wimbledon, the Swiss maestro rather wanted to do the same with Alcaraz’s coach Juan Carlos Ferrero. Federer now wants to apologize to the 21-year-old, who is hoping that the tennis legend enjoys his matches.
