On Tuesday, World No.3 Carlos Alcaraz staged yet another comeback at Wimbledon to keep his title defense alive. The Spaniard beat Tommy Paul to reach his second Wimbledon semi-final.
Although tennis players would like to spend as little time as possible on the court during the second week to prepare for the tougher rounds, the Spaniard has shown grit and determination throughout this fortnight. The match on Tuesday was just another episode in this collection.
I believe I can come back. If I’m struggling to find solutions, if the opponent is playing great tennis.. I believe at the end I’ll be able to come back and find solutions. The good rhythm. Today’s match for example. Even here in slams the matches are longer. I have more time to recover and come back. I believe in myself all the time.Carlos Alcaraz said in his post-match interview
In the third round, Alcaraz beat Frances Tiafoe in five sets 5-7, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. It was the second time he had defeated the American in a five-set encounter, the first being in the 2022 US Open. In the following round, he held off an incredible comeback from Ugo Humbert to win 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
Alcaraz has probably played more tennis than any of the six players still active in the men’s draw at Wimbledon. Hence, he would be delighted to have two days off in order to prepare for Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final on Friday.
Carlos Alcaraz completes comeback against Tommy Paul to reach Wimbledon semifinal
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is fighting hard to keep his Wimbledon title. On Tuesday, he came back to win against Tommy Paul with scores of 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, earning a spot in the semi-finals. It took him three hours and 11 minutes on Court 1 to secure the victory.
Paul, ranked No. 13, started strong by winning the first set and leading 2-0 in the second. However, Alcaraz turned the game around, breaking Paul’s serve seven times in the last three sets. This win gives the Spaniard a 3-2 lead in their head-to-head record.
Alcaraz converted eight of 27 break points throughout the match. He now faces Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals. The Russian had earlier defeated World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in a five-set match.
Last year, Alcaraz beat Medvedev easily in the semi-finals at Wimbledon. This year, his journey has been tougher. He won his first two matches in straight sets but needed five sets to beat Frances Tiafoe in the third round and four sets to defeat Ugo Humbert and Paul in the fourth round and quarter-finals respectively.
