Tennis fans are dumbfounded by what they’ve just witnessed- two epic Grand Slam semifinals. World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz battled cramps and physical struggles to defeat Alexander Zverev in five sets, while 38-year-old Novak Djokovic dethroned two-time Australian Open defending champion Jannik Sinner to reach his first Grand Slam final since Wimbledon 2024.
Alcaraz has repeatedly shown incredible mental fortitude to win matches when the odds are against him. The Spaniard experienced physical issues towards the end of the third set of the Australian Open semifinal, took a medical timeout, and struggled with his movement when he came back.
He was trailing 5-3 in the decider but fought back, going on to clinch the next four games after that and seal the win 6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5. At the post-match press conference, Alcaraz referenced his compatriot and 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal‘s iconic 2009 Australian Open run:
This situation reminds me a lot of what Rafa did in 2009, when he had that incredible match against Verdasco and everyone doubted whether he could play the final, and he ended up beating Federer in five sets. I’m not saying I’m going to do the same, but I think in a Grand Slam final you can’t say you’re tired.
In 2009, Nadal, who was 22 years old, won an epic five-set battle in Melbourne against Fernando Verdasco to reach his maiden hard-court Grand Slam final. In the final, he overcame archrival Roger Federer in another five-set thriller to become the first Spaniard to win the Australian Open title. Alcaraz further added:
The adrenaline rush will carry me if I manage to do things right in these next few hours. I know I’m going to wake up stiff tomorrow. Now I’m going to dedicate a few hours to the whole recovery process to be in the best possible shape. It’s going to be hard to fall asleep after everything I’ve been through, but I’m going to push myself and give my best to arrive on Sunday in the best possible condition.
Alcaraz has won some tough five-set battles in the past. He saved three championship points to defend his Roland Garros title last year in an iconic match against Jannik Sinner. Alcaraz also overcame Sinner in five sets in the semifinal and Zverev in five sets in the final of his maiden Roland Garros title run.
Alcaraz dethroned four-time defending champion Djokovic in five sets in the 2023 Wimbledon final. To summarize it, his resume is filled with moments of greatness and mental toughness. He is what legends are made of.
Carlos Alcaraz can become the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam in the Open Era
22-year-old Carlos Alcaraz is on the quest to script history at the Australian Open. By winning the title he will become the youngest man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam. This distinction currently belongs to his compatriot Rafael Nadal, who also became the youngest man to complete the Career Golden Slam when he won the 2010 US Open at the age of 24.
The only other men apart from them to achieve the Career Grand Slam in the Open Era are Rod Laver, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

Alcaraz has reached the final of the Australian Open for the first time in his career, and in this match, he will face 10-time champion Djokovic. Djokovic will also be looking to create history with an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam title.
Djokovic slightly leads their head-to-head 5-4, while Alcaraz won their last meeting in straight sets in the US Open semifinal last year. The result of their upcoming match is very difficult to predict, and it all depends on how both players’ bodies recover after a tough five-set match in the semifinal.
For Djokovic, it could be tougher for him to recover from a five-set match at his age to take on a powerhouse like Alcaraz. However, the Serb could also have the upper hand if Alcaraz is not at his fittest after experiencing physical issues in the semifinal. It will be a battle between two generations, and it all comes down to their recovery and mental strength.
