Carlos Alcaraz is through to the quarterfinals at the Shanghai Masters after he secured an emphatic win over former World No. 6 Gael Monfils on Wednesday (October 9). Alcaraz, who has not yet dropped a set, beat the Frenchman with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-5.

After the win, Alcaraz revealed the ‘secret’ of how he performs consistently. He said that he was not afraid of mistakes and when things don’t go his way, he doesn’t lose hope and keeps on trying.

With the freedom I play with, I’m not afraid to make mistakes, I just try to keep moving forward all the time, keep trying if I miss something. Most of the time, everything goes well. I can’t complain at all. But when I mention things that aren’t going as well as I wanted, or I don’t feel as good as I would like, I keep trying, and in the end, everything will be better, so that’s what I’m most happy about in my performances lately.

Carlos Alcaraz said at the press conference

Monfils had previously defeated Alcaraz when the Spaniard played his first-round match at the Cincinnati Masters. Alcaraz now leads Monfils 3-1 in their head-to-head meetings. Alcaraz also denied the 38-year-old the chance to become the second-oldest ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinalist since 1990 in series history.

Carlos Alcaraz says staying calm has helped him play better

Carlos Alcaraz stated that he has been playing better on the Asian swing, which wasn’t the case during the North American hard-court swing. Alcaraz played those tournaments after clinching the silver medal at the Paris Olympics, as he had mediocre performances, both in Cincinnati and at the US Open, where he lost in the second round.

After his fourth-round win in Shanghai, Alcaraz has improved to 51-9 on the season. The 21-year-old stated that staying calm and controlling his emotions has helped him to show his best tennis.

I am feeling the ball really well, much more than I was during the American swing.

Carlos Alcaraz said

Alcaraz’s quarterfinal opponent is Tomas Machac, who defeated Tommy Paul in three sets in the fourth round. The four-time Grand Slam champion has met Machac just once during the Round Robin stage between Spain and the Czech Republic in Group B of the Davis Cup.

Alcaraz secured a 1-0 head-to-head record over Machac after the latter retired during the match. He has become the first Spaniard since Rafael Nadal and Ramos-Vinolas (2017) to advance to the quarterfinals in Shanghai.
