While Carlos Alcaraz has never met Roger Federer on the ATP tour, he received a ‘masterclass’ from the Swiss maestro recently. Before kickstarting his Paris Masters campaign, he recalled meeting Federer during the Shanghai Masters.

Alcaraz bowed out of the Shanghai Masters after losing in straight sets to Tomas Machac in the quarterfinals. In Shanghai, the youngster had a practice session with Federer during which Alcaraz seized the opportunity to ask him tennis-related questions.

It was an unbelievable experience for me. Having the chance to play with him, it was great. I just enjoyed it so much, every shot, watching him play the shots so easily. It was a dream. It was a great experience. I had the chance to talk a lot with him and ask him some questions about when he was playing. It was a masterclass honestly, from him.

The Paris Masters will be the 21-year-old’s third tournament in France’s capital this season after the French Open and the Olympics. His first match is scheduled for Tuesday (October 29) against Nicolas Jarry. It will be their fourth encounter, and Alcaraz leads 2-1 in the head-to-head record.

They clashed for the first time in the 2023 Rio Open, followed by their meeting at the Wimbledon Championships the same year. In their most recent encounter in Buenos Aires this season, it was Jarry who emerged victorious.

Carlos Alcaraz says his game suits the indoor hard-court conditions.

Carlos Alcaraz doesn’t have much experience at the Paris Masters, so he wants to get used to playing in the tournament. The Murcia native however believes his aggressive game would suit the conditions. He is 4-3 in Bercy and has never progressed to the semifinals. Last season, he was defeated by Roman Safiullin in his opening round.

Well, I don’t have too much experience playing on the court, my game suits pretty well here because of how aggressive I play.

The four-time Grand Slam champion will walk on to the tournament as a heavy favorite after his rival Jannik Sinner withdrew from the tournament due to a viral illness. Before the Paris Masters, Alcaraz lost $6 million in prize money after going down to Sinner in the final of the Six Kings Slam exhibition event held in Riyadh.

Alcaraz’s last ATP title came at the China Open. He won in three sets against Sinner in the final to clinch his fourth ATP trophy of the season.
