Alcaraz and Tiafoe will meet for the first time since their five-set epic at the 2022 US Open, where the Spaniard eventually triumphed and eventually ended up winning the title. Tiafoe has claimed significant victories at Wimbledon before. In 2021, he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets, who had just reached the Roland Garros final that year. Considering Alcaraz’s journey at Roland Garros also stretched till the final day, the former top-10 player may need to replicate that success.
Carlos Alcaraz eases into the third round of Wimbledon
Defending Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz won against unseeded Australian Aleksandar Vukic on Wednesday to book his place in the third round. Despite a rough start, the former World No.1 secured a 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-2 victory to reach the third round. Alcaraz, aiming for his fourth Grand Slam title, initially struggled. Vukic broke his serve to level the opening set. He was leading 5-2 in the first set, and briefly lost focus and trailed 5-6.
However, the third seed recovered to force a tiebreak and led 5-1. Vukic narrowed the gap, but Alcaraz elevated his game to win the first set, much to the relief of his fans on Court One.
In the second set, Alcaraz found his rhythm. He overpowered his opponent, closing out the set without giving more chances. The third set saw the Spaniard maintain his dominance, securing his place in the next round. His performance against Vukic showed his growth since his early Wimbledon days. Once a newcomer without an ATP title, Alcaraz is now a seasoned Grand Slam champion.
The former World No.1 hit 40 winners in his ninth consecutive win at SW19. This is his third consecutive year reaching the third round at Wimbledon. He will face Frances Tiafoe in the next round, continuing his quest for his third ATP title of the season.
