Although Carlos Alcaraz clinched the doubles with Jakub Mensik on the first day of the Laver Cup, he regretted making one mistake during the match. The Team Europe doubles players beat Team World’s Taylor Fritz and Alex Michelsen to conclude the day in their team’s favor 3-1.
Alcaraz and Mensik converted one of the three breakpoints. Fritz and Michelsen could not break their opponents’ serve. But at one point, when Alcaraz and Mensik were at 40-0 while their opponents were serving, the Spaniard missed a volley, and he felt really bad afterward.
I f**** it up. I mean, that easy volley that I missed after my partner made that run, but the most easy volley that I had, I just miss it. It was a volley at 40-All. They were serving. I feel bad, to be honest, but you know, it is my first doubles, I would say, since Davis Cup last year. I felt a little bit lost sometimes. Sometimes I just had to be closer to the net.
Alcaraz made his Laver Cup debut last year and defeated Fritz in the final match to break Team World’s dominance. Mensik made his debut this year and won two matches (one singles win over Michelsen and his doubles win).
On the final day, Alcaraz and his doubles partner Casper Ruud will be up against Michelsen and Reilly Opelka as well as clash with Francisco Cerundolo in singles, while Mensik will face Alex de Minaur in singles.
Alexander Zverev on Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s dominance
Alexander Zverev is also in San Francisco, participating in the Laver Cup. He lost to Alex de Minaur on Day 2 and is scheduled to lock horns with Taylor Fritz in the final match of the tournament. Zverev trails 5-8 in the head-to-head matchups against the American, also losing five consecutive matches, including in the Stuttgart Open final this year.

In the pre-tournament press conference, Sascha talked about the dominace of his two rivals, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. He recalled the epic French Open final where the World No.1 came from two sets down and also saved three match points in the fourth set to defend his title.
There were some tennis matches there that will be remembered for the rest of our lives, but the way tennis has been played in this French Open final was something that we’ve never seen before. Not like good or bad. Just the style of tennis, in my opinion. It was great to see, great to watch. Yeah, those two guys, Carlos and Jannik, right now, they’re ahead of everybody else.
While Alcaraz and Sinner have been playing finals and winning titles one after the other, the World No.3 is struggling to produce consistent performance. So far this year, he has played three finals and won just the BMW Open by beating Ben Shelton.
In Grand Slam events, the 28-year-old lost to Sinner in the Australian Open final and to Novak Djokovic in the French Open quarterfinals. Then at Wimbledon and the US Open, the three-time Grand Slam finalist suffered a first-round exit (lost to Arthur Rinderknech) and third-round defeat (to eventual semifinalist Felix Auger-Aliassime), respectively.
After the Laver Cup, Zverev will next be seen in action at the China Open and will be projected to face Sinner in the final. The four-time Grand Slam champion lost a thrilling final last year to Alcaraz, who, instead of defending the title, will be going to Tokyo to make his debut at the Japan Open. After the two ATP 500 events, all of them will shift their focus onto the Shanghai Masters, where Sinner will play as the defending champion.
