It’s Carlos Alcaraz‘s new haircut that’s making more headlines than his performance against big-serving American Reilly Opelka in the first round of the US Open held on Monday (August 25). Alcaraz sported a buzzcut, and those who saw him gave mixed reactions.
Frances Tiafoe found it terrible, while John McEnroe took a playful jibe by claiming Alcaraz needed to spend 20 bucks for that haircut in New York. Maria Sharapova, however, was impressed by Alcaraz’s new look, and even the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium approved. After beating Opelka 6-4, 7-5, 6-4, Alcaraz, at the press conference, shared how he reacted to everyone’s reactions to his haircut.
I mean, since I just show the people my haircut, I didn’t see anything else in talking about my haircut. Some people like it. Some people don’t like it. To be honest, I’m just laughing about the reaction of the people. It is what it is. So I can’t do anything else right now, so I’m just laughing about everything that they are talking about my haircut.
Alcaraz, it seems, didn’t himself like his haircut. When he saw himself on the big screen, his head looked white.
I think I was faster if I (laughs). No, it was funny when I saw myself on the screen with the haircut. It was, I mean, super white, so it’s like weird for me to see myself that white in the hair.

Alcaraz is chasing his seventh title of the season, following his victories at the Rotterdam Open, Monte Carlo Masters, Italian Open, French Open, Queen’s Club Championships, and the Cincinnati Masters. Apart from these events, he also played in the finals of the Barcelona Open and Wimbledon Championships, losing the matches to Holger Rune and Jannik Sinner.
Alcaraz could only meet his arch-rival if they both progress to the championship clash. The Spaniard is also eyeing the World No.1 ranking, as having a better US Open champion than Sinner will help him dethrone the Italian ace from the top. Sinner is aiming to defend his US Open title (beat Taylor Fritz in straight sets last year).
Carlos Alcaraz on his match against Reilly Opelka
It was Carlos Alcaraz’s career’s first match against Reilly Opelka. As expected, Opelka’s serves troubled the five-time Grand Slam champion, who found it difficult to find his rhythm. Opelka hit 14 aces to Alcaraz’s four. The Murcia native said his focus during the practice session the next day would be to gain his rhythm.

I just tried to return well, playing as long as I could, trying to get rhythm and a good feeling. It was a tough first round, but I am happy with how I managed to play well.
Carlos Alcaraz said at the press conference
Alcaraz is chasing his career’s second title at the US Open (beat Casper Ruud in the 2022 US Open final). Last year in New York, his run had ended in the second round.

Alcaraz will next lock horns with Mattia Bellucci. The Italian ace received a walkover from his first-round opponent, Shang Juncheng, in the fourth set.
Fans left stunned seeing Reilly Opelka towering over Carlos Alcaraz
Another thing from Alcaraz’s first-round match that grabbed the attention of the fans was the height difference between him and Opelka.

When they stood beside each other, Opelka towered over the 22-year-old, and fans on social media claimed that Alcaraz looked like a small kid in front of the 27-year-old.

Chciałbym nadmienić, że Carlos Alcaraz ma 183 cm wzrostu 😱
A Reilly Opelka? Reilly Opelka chyba tyle, ile Statua Wolności 🗽 🙉#USOpen2025 #USOpen pic.twitter.com/zXuLBHQiF3
Opelka has never made it past the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament. It was at his home slam back in 2021 that he reached the last 16, losing it to Nikoloz Basilashvili.
