Carlos Alcaraz was at his scintillating best as he defeated Taylor Fritz 6-2, 7-5 on the final day of the Laver Cup. This win secured Team Europe’s fifth Laver Cup title and their first since 2021.
Alcaraz’s performance was reminiscent of what the tennis world has seen from him this year. In fact, Team World often compared his level to Roger Federer‘s in 2005. That year, Federer, like Alcaraz in 2024, won two of the four Grand Slam titles.
I’m too far away from that level. Hopefully I’ll reach it one day. But it’s gonna be impossible. They have to change my name because Fed 05 is gonna be forever for him.Carlos Alcaraz said in the post-match interview
Federer in 2005 was at his peak, collecting 11 titles in one calendar year and finishing as World No. 1. Additionally, he achieved an incredible 81-4 record for the entire season.
Although Alcaraz may not have matched Federer’s 2005 statistics, he has many years ahead to reach the Swiss icon’s level. At just 21, he has already reached the heights that Federer did in his prime.
Bjorn Borg leaves Laver Cup as a champion with Team Europe
Bjorn Borg left the Laver Cup on a high note after leading Team Europe to their fifth title this year. During the post-tournament ceremony, he paid a heartfelt tribute to his rival and Team World captain, John McEnroe.
I’m gonna miss John a lot. Of course we’re gonna see each other… I remember when Roger called me and asked if I wanted to be captain for Team Europe. That was 8 years ago. I didn’t really know what to say. But I was happy to say yes. And he said John would be captain for Team World. John we’ve been having a good time. Even if you guys lostBjorn Borg said in the Laver Cup post-tournament ceremony
Borg and McEnroe will both step down as captains of Team Europe and Team World, respectively. Yannick Noah will replace Borg, and Andre Agassi will succeed McEnroe as the new captain in 2025.
The concept of the Laver Cup was primarily to bridge the generational gap between today’s superstars and former players. This combination worked wonders, as Borg and McEnroe brought their enthusiasm and encouragement to their teams.
On the final day of this year’s Laver Cup, Roger Federer presented Borg and McEnroe with customized Rolex watches. The Swiss Maestro was ever-present in Berlin supporting the event.
