Carlos Alcaraz has stated that his goal this season is to end the year as the World No. 1. The Spaniard became the youngest year-end No. 1 (19 years, four months, and six days) in 2022. He failed to achieve the feat last year but is focused on doing so this season.

Since the French Open, Alcaraz has won 20 of his 22 matches. Ten of those matches have been against the Top 20, and he has lost just one of them. He has won the Roland Garros and Wimbledon titles so far after a slow start of the year saw him win just one title in five months.

Despite being World No. 3, the Spaniard’s hopes of finishing on top of the rankings are not impossible. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner failed to defend the Canadian Open title. He exited the tournament in the quarterfinals, defending just 200 ranking points out of 1000.

The Italian’s ranking points have dropped significantly from 9,570 to 8,770. While World No. 2 Novak Djokovic has 8,460 points, Alcaraz lost 180 points for withdrawing from the Canadian Open, slipping from 8,130 to 7,950 points. Despite the 820 points gap between Alcaraz and Sinner, the 21-year-old believes he can finish as World No.1

Obviously, being number 1 is a goal every time I'm [behind] and the race is an important ranking for me. So I'm very focused on that. I'm focused on going to each tournament, thinking about playing great tennis, on creating a good result just to improve in the race, and this year, finishing the year as No. 1 is one of my main goals right now.

He will hope to get a handful of ranking points at the Cincinnati Open, with Djokovic not participating and Sinner struggling with a hip problem.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, he is competing at the Canadian Open and hopes to go about his business with a positive attitude.

[I’m happy] about the way that I [handled] some situations, that I stayed there, even knowing that I didn’t play, or I wasn’t playing great tennis. But [I played] with a positive attitude, with the right face always and trying to find solutions in some moments that I could do it.

The Spaniard has been seen practicing in Cincinnati court following his arrival in the city on Sunday (August 11). He will face either Gael Monfils or Alexei Popyrin in the opening round of the tournament.
