Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic shared a moment at the net after the Spaniard had stormed to a three-set win over the Serbian in the 2024 Wimbledon final. The 21-year-old revealed that Djokovic was an absolute gentleman in taking the defeat and privately called him a “Titan”.
The Spaniard’s win over Djokovic was his second successive All England Club victory, having beaten the Serbian in a five-set thriller last year. In their two previous meeting in 2023, Djokovic came out on top but leading up to the Wimbledon final, the Serbian was the second favorite to win the Championship having just returned from his knee surgery.
However, Alcaraz and Djokovic met at the SW19 weeks before the final, when the Serbian was still dealing with his knee. The 21-year-old shared that he called Djokovic a superhuman for beating rehabilitation time to play at the competition. The 37-year-old replied by calling him a Titan but never predicted he would meet him in the final.
When I saw him this year at Wimbledon for the first time, and he was dealing with his knee, we joked and I told him he was a superhuman, a titan. Since then, every time we saw each other here he called me a titan and on the net he said to me: 'Titan, congratulations, you deserve it'. I don't remember much else.'Carlos Alcaraz said via Marca
Djokovic is yet to win any Grand Slam this year, having won three in 2023. Meanwhile, should Alcaraz win the US Open later this year, he will join the elite tennis stars of just five men in the Open Era to have won three out of four Grand Slam titles in a year. The first player to achieve the feat was Mats Wilander, followed by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Djokovic.
