Lorenzo Musetti reached his first Masters 1000 final at the 2025 Monte Carlo Masters. He made an impressive run throughout the tournament, defeating several higher-ranked players like three-time champion Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alex de Minaur in the previous rounds. However, the grueling nature of his matches throughout the week took a toll on the Italian as he went on to play the biggest match of his career.

During his finals match against Carlos Alcaraz, Musetti took a medical timeout at the third set to address an upper right leg pain after dropping serve to trail 3-0. After winning his maiden Monte Carlo Masters title, Alcaraz expressed a sense of sadness over the manner in which the match ended, hoping that Musetti would be “100% really soon”.

This is not the way I want to win a match. Thinking about Lorenzo, he’s been through a really tough week, long and intense matches. I just feel sorry for him to end one of the best results he’s done like this. It’s not easy. Hopefully it’s nothing serious, and he will be 100% really soon.

Carlso Alcaraz said in post-match interview

Alcaraz, on the other hand, made a strong start to his clay season. After a shocking early round exit at the Miami Open, a tournament where he triumphed in 2022, the 21-year-old regained better form in his next tournament at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Making only his second appearance in the Principality, Alcaraz faced some tough and intense challenges, particularly in his quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, before he reigned champion. With this triumph, Alcaraz has clinched his 18th ATP title, sixth ATP Masters 1000 title, and ninth title on clay.

Lorenzo Musetti dominated the first set, however, Carlos Alcaraz turned the tables in the next set

Lorenzo Musetti had entered the Monte Carlo Masters finals with a 1-3 head-to-head record over Carlos Alcaraz, with his sole victory being at the 2022 Hamburg Open finals. Musetti made a dominating start in the finals match against Carlos Alcaraz at Monte Carlo. Alcaraz made 14 unforced errors in the first set, 11 off the forehand alone, as the Italian built upon a 4-1 lead, eventually clinching the set 6-3.

The World No. 3 opened his bakery in the subsequent sets, with a breadstick followed by a bagel. He incorporated some successful slices and drop shots in the second set and began controlling the game closer to the baseline. By the third set, the match had become entirely one-way in the Spaniard’s favor, with a despondent Musetti taking a medical timeout.

Talking about myself this, I’m really happy to have won Monte Carlo for the first time. I think it’s been a really difficult win with a lot of difficult situations. I’m proud of myself for how I’ve dealt with everything. It’s been a really difficult one for me. Outside and on the court. Coming here and seeing the hard work pay off, I’m really happy.

Carlos Alcaraz added

The 23-year-old ultimately chose to continue playing the match despite his restricted motion. Alcaraz won 12 of the last 14 points. Alcaraz had, in fact, made more unforced errors than winners throughout the match. Once he sealed the victory 3-6,-1, 6-0, Alcaraz raised his arms in celebration before consoling Musetti.
