Is it the end of the Novak Djokovic era? No one expected a one-sided Wimbledon final with Djokovic in it. He was chasing his 25th Grand Slam title but Carlos Alcaraz crushed his dream on Sunday (July 14) by beating him with scores of 6-2,6-2,7-6(7-4) on the Centre Court.

No one in the Open Era won a Wimbledon after being two sets down and even Djokovic failed to do that. Alcaraz is now 4-0 in Grand Slam finals. His previous major win came at this year’s French Open. After his win, an ecstatic Alcaraz shared a warm embrace with his parents and team.

Djokovic throughout the match looked like he was struggling for some reason. He was not the ‘old’ Djokovic and did not play his natural game. He was struggling to move and was not sliding properly but Alacarz made him run all over the court. Alcaraz’s serve was strong and from the start of the game, he was playing with intensity.

The only mistake from Alcaraz came in the third set when he was on the verge of winning the match but it seemed he was losing control of his nerves as he committed double faults one after other. Djokovic, though somehow won the set had the daunting task in front of him.

Djokovic broke the serve and won the next game. The match then went into a tie-break and this time as well, Alcaraz faltered a bit with his serves but it did not last for long and he soon became the Wimbledon champion for the second time in a row! That too at the age of just 21.

Novak Djokovic is satisfied with a runner-up finish

Novak Djokovic, who dealt with a knee injury he suffered during the French Open, did everything he could to play at Wimbledon. He is one of those players who loves just the victory but this time, he is satisfied being just the finalist.

I have to be very proud. Obviously, there’s a bit of disappointment right now ten minutes after the match finished. As I reflect on what I’ve been through the last 5 weeks, along with my team members and family, I have to say I’m very satisfied.
Novak Djokovic said after the match

Carlos Alcaraz also became the only fifth player to beat Djokovic in straight sets in a Grand Slam final. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Daniil Medvedev, and Andy Murray had previously defeated Djokovic in straight sets. Before losing to Alcaraz, Nole lost just one Wimbledon final and is now 7-3. Two of these defeats came from Alcaraz.
