Spanish ace Carlos Alcaraz has announced his withdrawal from the Italian Open in Rome next week due to a muscle edema in his forearm. This comes after the 20-year-old star had earlier withdrawn from playing in two clay tournaments this season.

Alcaraz had earlier withdrawn from the Monte Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open, citing the same forearm injury. Although he returned to the Madrid Open, after his second-round match, he revealed that he still felt pain in his right arm.

The pain became evident when he played against Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, in which he struggled to win after over three hours on the court.

The stress on the right arm made it more difficult for Alcaraz the following day when he met Andrey Rublev. Despite winning the first set, his 14-match winning streak was snapped in a 6-4, 3-6, 2-6 loss against Rublev at the Caja Majica.

His hopes for a third consecutive Madrid title were also quashed in front of the home crowd. After the match, he revealed that the pain in his forearm led to his disappointing loss and that he never believed he would reach the quarterfinals.

However, the pain has not yet left the Wimbledon champion, as he announced via his X (formerly known as Twitter) page that he has muscle edema in the pronator teres after running a test on his right arm. Adding that he will not be able to compete at the Italian Open.

I felt some pain after playing in Madrid, some discomfort in my arm. Today I did some tests and I have a muscle edema in my pronator teres, a consequence of my recent injury. Unfortunately I will not be able to play in Rome. I need to rest so I can recover and play 100% pain-free. I am very sorry, I will see you next year @InteBNLdItalia.

Alcaraz’s withdrawal comes days after Jannik Sinner withdrew from the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open due to a hip injury. Yesterday, Daniil Medvedev was forced to retire while playing his quarterfinal match against Czech Jiri Lehecka. Meanwhile, the Italian Open starts on May 6.

Carlos Alcaraz suffers second injury of the season in just four months

Carlos Alcaraz has competed in just six tournaments this season due to injury. The Spanish star’s first injury came in his second-round match at the Rio Open in February.

He twisted his ankle after trying to hit a ball. However, it didn’t take too long before he returned for the Sunshine Doubles in March.

The second major setback came days after exiting the Miami Open while training for the Monte Carlo Masters. He sprained his forehand, which led him to withdraw from the tournament a day before kickoff. Failing to recover in time, he also withdrew from the Barcelona Open.
