Carlos Alcaraz, on Wednesday (December 17), announced something that sent shock waves across the tennis community. Alcaraz has split with his longtime coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero.

He took to Instagram and wrote a lengthy message, thanking his now ex-coach for everything they achieved together. The Spanish coach joined the Spanish ace’s team in 2019 when Alcaraz was just 16.

It’s very difficult for me to write this post… After more than seven years together, Juanki and I have decided to end our time together as coach and player. Thank you for turning my childhood dreams into reality. We started this journey when I was just a kid, and throughout this time, you’ve accompanied me on an incredible adventure, both on and off the court. And I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every step of it with you.

Under Ferrero, Alcaraz lifted six Grand Slam titles and reached the top of the rankings table. The reason behind their split neither of them shared.

So many memories are flooding back that choosing just one wouldn’t be fair. You’ve helped me grow as an athlete, but above all, as a person. And something I value immensely: I’ve enjoyed the process. That’s what I’ll take with me, the journey we’ve shared. Now, a time of change is upon us, both, new adventures and new projects. But I’m certain that we’ll face them in the right way, giving our best, as we always have. Always adding value.

We have been an incredible team despite the difficulties, and I am sure you will continue to achieve great success. I wish I could have continued. I am convinced that good memories and good people always find a way to cross paths again.

It’s well known in the tennis community that Ferrero and Alcaraz had arguments regarding the tennis schedule. Because of the long 11-month calendar, the World No.1 wanted to have some time for himself, particularly after the clay swing, so that he could recharge well before the grass swing. But Ferrero wanted him to practice for the grass-court events.

This was one of the major talking points of the tennis world when Alcaraz’s documentary, Carlos Alcaraz: My Way, was released on Netflix earlier this year, and this raised eyebrows that things were not great between the two.

Also, a few days ago, Tennis Hall of Fame journalist Steve Flink claimed Alcaraz signing up for exhibition events one after the other during the off-season might have upset Ferrero. Alcaraz has so far featured in two exhibition events, including one in Miami, where he defeated Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca.

Just a few days before the start of the Australian Open, Alcaraz will be in Incheon, in South Korea, for an exhibition event where he will lock horns with none other than his arch-rival, Jannik Sinner. The main draw of the Australian Open starts on January 18.

Alcaraz has never progressed beyond the quarterfinals in Melbourne. This year, he reached the last eight but suffered a four-set defeat at the hands of 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz, however, finished the season with eight titles from 11 finals, including the French Open and the US Open.
