After a one-sided WTA final where Iga Swiatek dominated from the word go against Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, tennis fans witnessed a thrilling encounter between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev in the men’s final inside the Philippe-Chatrier on Sunday (June 9). Alcaraz, who made an impressive comeback after being two sets down, lifted his first Roland Garros title with a scoreline of 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, becoming the youngest player to win Grand Slam titles on all courts.
Both the players forced each other to bring out extra shots and cover the ground to return the shots. Alcaraz did not face many difficulties in the first set, restricting Sascha to three games. He played the set without much pressure as he had smile on his face even after making unforced errors.
The momentum shifted completely in the second set. Alcaraz brought out different shots and tried to take Zverev by surprise by changing his direction during the rallies but made some wrong judgments. Alcaraz tried to hit aces to take the pressure off of his shoulders but it all went in vain. Zverev, who relied on his backhand, pressurized Alcaraz, which prompted the latter to opt for his famous drop shots, but it resulted in unforced errors.
Zverev capitalized on the win to secure the third set 7-5, which Alcaraz pushed to the tie-breaker. The Spaniard made an impressive comeback in the fourth set and won four games in a row, forcing Zverev to play some extra shots. After Zverev won the fifth game, the 21-year-old, who complained of cramps, took a medical time out after which, he won the rest of the games and eventually the set 6-1.
Then in the fifth set, when Alcaraz was leading by 2-1 and both the players were at 40-40, the crowd witnessed the most interesting rally of the match. It was after Zverev argued that the umpire that he should be awarded the point due to Alcaraz’s double fault, which he was not given. A frustrated Zverev tried whatever he had at his disposal, but his unforced errors awarded the points to his opponent. Alcaraz continued to dominate in the decider and eventually won the set and the match!

I used to think Andre Agassi was the greatest pure shot maker in men’s tennis history—but it’s this kid they call Carlitos. Shots he creates are incredible—especially on the run. Carlos Alcaraz is a worthy heir to the Rafael Nadal clay court legacy. Outclassed Zverev in 5 sets.

Alcaraz is just Rafa Nadal reincarnated as a right hander tbh. Zverev is good but crumbles in finals

Alcaraz who is touted to carry on the legacy of rafa defeating Sascha Zverev in GS finals who denied Rafa in R1 has to be the most sweetest ending one could have hoped for in this year’s #RolandGarros ?

Two years ago, Alexander Zverev left the Roland Garros in a wheelchair after injuring his ankle during a semifinal against Rafael Nadal. This year, Sascha kick-started his campaign with a straight-set win over Nadal, becoming the only fourth player to beat Nadal at Roland Garros and even he expected him to finally lift his first Grand Slam title. But now, he will have to wait for the US Open to try his luck.
