Spanish tennis ace Carlos Alcaraz marched into the semifinals of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships as he beat the USA’s Tommy Paul in the fifth round. The defending champion came back from a set behind to pin down Paul in four sets and inch a step closer to winning the crown once again. However, it was not an easy win for Alcaraz with Paul threatening to take the second set as well, after claiming the first.
Nevertheless, Alcaraz maintained his composure and stuck to strength. Things started aligning for the Spaniard as he won the second set 6-4, after losing the first one 5-7. In the next two sets, Alcaraz was back in his zone, thrashing Paul 6-2, 6-2. Even in his previous match against Ugo Humbert in the fourth round, Alcaraz lost a set before clinching the game.
Against Frances Tiafoe, Alcaraz was pushed to the brink by the American as he lost two sets (first and third). However, despite these stutters, Alcaraz managed to win every time and it is his mentality that helped him come back after being pushed to the edge. Following his win over Paul, Alcaraz was asked about his thought process in such situations.
The Spaniard was asked how it feels to him when he can win a match despite not playing his best tennis. In response, Alcaraz revealed what his thought process usually is in a situation where he is unable to play to the level he is capable of. The 21-year-old said that he just focuses on winning the match.
Carlos Alcaraz takes a leaf out of Big Three’s book
Carlos Alcaraz further talked about the approach the ‘Big Three’ used in these kinds of situations and claimed to be enacting it. The three-time Grand Slam champion said that when he is unable to play his best tennis, he just tries to find the solution that will help him beat the opponent.
Alcaraz mentioned that this is the approach the likes of Roger Federer, Rafel Nadal, and Novak Djokovic adopted whenever they felt they weren’t at their best.
I think what the Big Three did throughout their careers, they’re not always gonna play their best tennis. But even like that they’re gonna find their good tennis just to win those matches. That’s what I’m thinking. When I’m not playing my best tennis, I’m gonna try to find solutions just to be a bit better, just to beat the opponent.Carlos Alcaraz said in the post-match press conference.
Alcaraz will next face Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal. The Spaniard enjoys a great rivalry with the Russian, having defeated him four times out of six played. However, Medvedev won the match when the two players met on a grass court last time, at the 2021 Wimbledon.
