Carlos Alcaraz secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the third consecutive time. This time, the Spaniard will be hoping to make the semifinals for the first time, given that he lost to Alexander Zverev in 2024 and to Novak Djokovic last year in the last eight.
On Sunday (January 25), the six-time Grand Slam champion knocked out 19th seed Tommy Paul 7-6(6), 6-4, 7-5 to improve his head-to-head record to 6-2. In the middle of the match in the sweltering Melbourne conditions, the Rod Laver Arena reverberated with laughter thanks to a lighthearted moment.
Alcaraz was distracted by not one, not two, but three marriage proposals, all at the same time, one after the other. One woman shouted, “Carlos, marry my daughter.” Seconds later came another proposal, “Marry my sister-in-law.”
The stadium was in stitches when another woman yelled, “Marry me.” A too-focused Alcaraz responded to the proposals with a subtle smile as he prepared to receive the serve.

After the match, Alcaraz removed his T-shirt, and the crowd, as expected, went wild. During the on-court interview, Jim Courier pulled his legs, asking: “When you change your shirt, man, the crowds was going crazy. You’re kind of milking it, you’re playing to the crowd, aren’t you?“
I don’t, to be honest (laughs). I just want to feel comfortable for the interview. It’s really hot here, so I didn’t want to make the interview, you know, with the sweat shirt…that’s why. I mean, I’m just happy the people like it.
Carlos Alcaraz said
Courier did not buy the explanation, playfully accusing the reigning French Open and US Open champion of lying on live television.

The match also saw a brief interruption when some fans started shouting for help during the first set tie-break. Tournament officials wasted no time in providing assistance. Emma Raducanu‘s former coach, Mark Petchey, was quoted as saying by multiple outlets, “There’s something happening above us, I’m not sure if it’s a spectator that’s fallen ill.“
Later, the umpire revealed it was an emergency case involving an elderly woman. The match was halted for about 14 minutes.
Tommy Paul says Carlos Alcaraz suffocated him during the match
At the press conference after crashing out of the Australian Open, Tommy Paul was asked how it felt playing Carlos Alcaraz now versus the past versions of him. Paul, who met the Murcia native for the first time in 2022 and went on his clash with him in 2023, 2024, and 2025, said Alcaraz gives no time to react.

I definitely don’t have an excuse right this time. He totally outplayed me. I guess the way that I would describe it, he kind of suffocates you in a way. He makes you feel like you have no time. He rushes you. Today, he exposed, like… I hit my forehand terribly today, and he saw that early, and he was trying to get in that forehand to forehand rally, and he did it much better than I did, and that’s what it felt like. It felt like he got all the patterns he wanted, and I was having a tough time getting into the patterns that I wanted.
Paul, a one-time Grand Slam semifinalist, reached the last four here at Melbourne Park back in 2023. Since then, he has played four Major quarterfinals, including at the Australian Open and the French Open last year.
The first seed will next be facing Alex de Minaur or Alexander Bublik. Alcaraz has added each of the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open titles twice to his trophy cabinet. The title at Melbourne Park will make him the youngest man in the Open Era to achieve the Career Grand Slam feat.
