Carmella's WWE contract has reportedly expired (via WWE)

Carmella was last seen in WWE during the March 6th, 2023, edition of Monday Night Raw. She faced Bianca Belair in a singles match but was unable to put away the then-Raw Women’s Champion. She would wrestle another match at a house show before going on maternity leave, and she has not been seen with the company since.

According to Fightful and PW Nexus, Carmella is no longer with WWE after her contract recently expired. She had been with the company since 2013 and was promoted to the main roster on SmackDown in 2016. She had an incredible year on the blue brand, winning the first-ever women’s Money in the Bank briefcase and successfully cashing in to become world champion.

Now, WWE generally does have the right to add injury time to contracts. Essentially, the company can freeze one’s contract for the duration that one is unable to compete. They then add this time towards the end. The company reportedly did something similar for Sheamus when he was on the shelf during 2023 and 2024.

However, it is unclear how this would work in the case of maternity leave. Furthermore, Carmella has likely taken more time off than her maternity leave allowed due to her health issues. Regardless of the legal situation, the 37-year-old is still expected to re-sign with the company when she is healthy and if she decides to return to pro wrestling. Her going to a different promotion like AEW seems very far-fetched.

Why has Carmella not returned to WWE?

Another superstar who recently returned after two years away due to childbirth is Alexa Bliss, who shocked the world with her entrance during the 2025 Women’s Royal Rumble match. However, her situation cannot be compared to that of the inaugural Ms. Money in the Bank, as the latter faced quite a challenging childbirth experience and is still dealing with the repercussions.

Carmella had revealed that she developed flat feet soon after giving birth, leaving her wrestling return uncertain. However, she does seem to be making some progress towards a full recovery. A few weeks ago, the 37-year-old posted an Instagram story where she provided her fans with an update.

The former Women’s Champion opened up about the challenges that women face during childbirth. She expressed what she had been going through over the past 14 months. Furthermore, she emphasized the strength and resilience of women in society as she continued her journey to being fully healthy once again.
